Extending your Windows Desktop

Using ZoneScreen, VNC server and VNC viewer (TightVNC, but any should work fine), it is possible to use your joggler as a secondary PC monitor.

The basic idea is to use ZoneScreen to create a virtual extension of your desktop, then use VNC to access it.

  1. Install ZoneScreen
  2. Right click Desktop -> Properties. Select settings tab, select the new display (Default Monitor on ZoneScreen Virtual Display Driver). Check the box labelled "Extend my Windows Desktop onto this monitor", click OK.
  3. Start ZoneScreen, select "Act as a Server", select the display that you just created (Likely \\.\DISPLAY2 or 3).
  4. Select one of the "800x480" resolution settings (confirm the change), higher colour depth will result in a better picture but more delay
  5. Click Next, then Cancel

Your Windows desktop will now extend over the edge of your monitor with an 800x480 area in the upper right corner that you won't be able to see.

  1. Install VNCserver
  2. Set up a password and start the server
  3. Connect from your joggler "vncviewer <ip address> -fullscreen"
  4. Use the touchscreen of your joggler to pan VNCviewer (tap on the right side of the screen and wait for it to scroll) to the top right area where you should now see your new Windows desktop.

Returning to single desktop

Simply un-check the "Extend my Windows Desktop" checkbox in Display properties.

Issues

  • VNCViewer disconnects regularly (approx 1-2 hour intervals)
  • Sometimes get artefacts in VNCViewer
  • Will need to use SSH to kill VNCViewer if you are using joggler without a keyboard.
