Help - Unbuntu SCSI cd rom module support

Re-purposing my Joggler to become the control console for a multimedia project, and I need to get an external USB dvd writter working, for some reason the device wants to connect using the SCSI cd rom module (sr_mod.ko) - tested on another linux box, soemthing to do with the USB to Sata controller board being used.

However, this isn't standard in the Unbutu image's I've downloaded. I've also tried to compile it from source (on a range of 3.2.0.x Unbuntu linux source image) and always seem to get the "-1 invalid format" error message when modprobe/insmod the compiled module.

Running the Xubuntu Precise build (12.04), kernel build 3.2.20joggler1 - has anyone got sr_mod.ko working on this build and if so can they share any pointers, or even share a working version?
