Joggler as Wifi AP router

Post by trevordavies »

I've been trying to use my joggler as a wifi router - it works for WEP ad-hoc - but will all the horror stories surrounding drive-by hacking, I want to use WPA. (WPA2 is definitely unsupported in ad-hoc mode it seems).

I just can't get WPA ad-hoc to work with the internal ralink 2780 wifi card. it refuses to use encryption and runs clear.. no thanks.

so instead of just finding a card that works in ad-hoc mode for WPA - I think I want something that does full 'master' or 'ap mode'.

This looks good: http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_fspt= ... bx=1&rt=nc
linux has good atheros support it seems.

I'm thinking I could replace the redundant internal wifi with the flash drive (it's a tiny one) would it boot from that?

and connect the big wifi thing via the side usb port (although I'll use a hub anyway - I have one of these: http://www.hama.co.uk/053213/hama-usb-2 ... us-powered ( I got cheap on ebay )

Is anyone already using their joggler as a wifi access point?

Isn't there a kernel bug concerning ad-hoc WPA?

funny - that issues links through to other issues with recent network manager which point to kernel issues. just got a patch in precise (not mine but me and a few others bringing the issue up), that the new network manager switch to nl80211 interface and some drivers didnt advertise any capabilities on that interface although they had it. including my old laptop. see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... bug/973241

anyway - I suspect using the joggler as an access point would be a bit crap anyway. crappy signal, bad drivers and not worth the effort for the cost of a cheap wireless access point.

I dream more of russian girls than tech ;-) *ahem* :)

I do think I would rather buy a £15 access point than try and get the joggler to do it though. even if it is possible.

Due to Polish wife (aka The BOSS) I think it safest for me to keep this stuff in my imagination :)

I believe I have now derailed the thread too much. Apologies - back to access points! ;-)

I tried this a while back. For some reason that I was unable to figure out, Connectify won't find the WiFi hardware on my XP build... ad hoc was fine though.

I use my HTC for internet access on my laptop all the time. That said configuring a Joggler to be a combo AP / modem / WAN device wouldn't really be a major issue.

On a non Joggler tangent I just purchased 3 different combo 3G / WAN AP's this morning to test here for my failover internet access. I am also helping a friend set up some remote control to his home. He has no way to get internet access but does have 3G-4G access there.

These are the ones that I purchased to "play" with.

TP-Link TL-MR3420 ($41 USD)

It work on my desktop XP with Jogglers usb-wlan as Access Point

download-install-right click on icon in right down corner-switch to AP mode (it use Internet Connection Sharing)

Pete, we get patchy 3G here in the UK and no sign of 4G, that I know about, anyway. We get screwed over here by service providers!!

Upgraded to iOS5 my iPhone now supports data tethering, which is handy but my iPad doesn't and that has the 15Gb data allowance.
