What would be best for me?

Post by Jetpac »

Hi guys! i have recently managed to pick up a joggler (at last)

I was wondering if you could point me in the right direction in what would be suitable for me?

My setup: I currently have my house wirelessly networked and have a server running windows server 2008r2 which serves Movies and Music to an XBMC build in the living room.

I would like to use the joggler in the kitchen with the radio, music from the server, maybe some tv/film from the server, weather and to access recipes (i currently have loads stored on evernote but would be willing to move them over to something else if needed)

What would the best route for me to go with the joggler with respect to software to do what i want?

Thanks for any help you can give!

I used to use ubuntu but recently switched to Mevi's windows distribution... and it is great! i installed xbmc and that means that iplayer is good quality streaming. i also use netflix on it! as you currently use windows server, if you use window's distro then it should be easy to share files over the network? it comes with squeezebox server for music only too - though xbmc should have everything you need if you download/install that. for weather/recipes you can just boot up chrome/firefox/internet explorer.

I'm using Xubuntu, xbmc is already onboard in buzz's image file(s)
Brightness to 70% & i go to get VDR on it
+ Medion X10 remote control for vdr & xbmc ...
Hardware: O2 Joggler/Patriot XPorter XT Rage 8GB/Medion X10 rc
Software: Xubuntu 11.10 / XBMC + YaVDR
Streaming: Seagate Dockstar/Afatech DVB-T/2xUSB-HD (incl. rsync-backup) - Debian Squeeze + YaVDR (streamdev)

For music, I would suggest running Logitech Media Server (formerly Squeezebox Server) on your own Windows server, if possible, and installing Squeezeplayer on the Joggler. The Squeezeplayer interface is fantastic and finger-friendly for Joggler use.

The above approach would allow you to play more file types through the Joggler (such as WMA, which the Joggler can't play natively). You also need Mplayer installed on the server to re-encode WMA streams.

XBMC is great for video.

You also have the ability to view supported video types and listen to audio files (including WMA) on the Joggler's stock OS. Read my post (3rd one down) about the Joggler's in-built 'Connect and Play' capability at http://www.jogglerwiki.com/forum/viewto ... iles#p4546.

Thanks for the posts guys,

Based on what i am after what OS would be best to use? im after something fairly finger friendly... could i do all the above with the standard joggler OS?

Squeezeplayer was on my list of server to-dos as well :D

All my movies are in MP4 or AVI containers

Sorry, yes that's what I meant. Even the stock OS can handle WMA natively using Connect and Play.

I would think the O2 original OS, but with Plug 'n' Pimp v2 will do what you need. I'm still yet to set this up myself, as most of my Jogglers need reflashing, but the feedback I've read has been very positive! :)

if you have a windows server, then use the latest mevi xp image, it has all you want and with vcn is so easy to configure in its shares and servers.

I have my own joggler serving files for my media player, music for my squeezebox radio, squeeze play by itself and.... pictures for my iPad (using apache+galley3+mobile theme).

and it works cool.

You could do most of that with linux (and in my opinion, linux is more stable), but can be a pain in the ass to configure if you don't have a good degree of Linux knowledge.
