o2 Joggler with External Harddrive

Hi!

I'm pondering buying a Joggler for using an 500GB External Harddrive with mp3 files on it.

My question is, can the Joggler handle it? Is it sluggish? I have a Squeezebox Touch and it is painfully slow with my harddrive attached and I wanted an alternative. I currently stream my music via my laptop but it's not viable as I do not want to turn my laptop on everytime I want to listen to an album.

Also thinking of getting a 4GB USB flash drive with Ubuntu as advertised on ebay but what music software is available to play mp3 files locally besides squeezeplay?

If you're using a HDD, why not put a replacement OS on that. Boot to Ubuntu, Android or XP?

Will work just fine for media playback.

there are lots of ways to do this on the joggler , its quite easy to build your own stick if you read the info .
If your music is well organised and mainly albums i would recommend xbmc which is excellent
You could run Ubuntu Joli and use xbmc ; run one of the new xp builds with xbmc ; run Android and use one of the many music apps , Upnplay and bubbleupnp work well .
xbmc works really well on linux but is better controlled either with an Android phone or an ipod touch/ iphone or a keyboard plugged in as it can be a bit fiddly .
There are of course many other types of music software on all of these builds , just get stuck in and have a go .

Or you could use a Bluetooth keyboard. There are lots of miniature variants available that are a good fit with the Joggler.
If you buy one, make sure it comes with a USB Bluetooth receiver - the Joggler doesn't have Bluetooth built-in.

I'm usually OK with on-screen keyboards but I always use a Bluetooth mouse with Ubuntu; moving the cursor with your (relatively) fat finger is a PITA.

I use ubuntu on my joggler on a 4gb usb stick.

If you install vlc and get it to run using web interface (I can explain more later) then you can download a program called VLCdirect for an android phone and control it using your phone! So using your phone you can select which music files to open... i use it to select different radio stations by saving down links as well...

I think you can do this with XBMC android app too but I haven't tried it yet
