Plug N Pimp question

Hi all, I'm a new user and o2 Joggler owner, so please be kind

One of the first things I did was try a bootable Ubuntu OS off a USB key and whilst this is fun and impressive, I quite like the standard joggler OS for simply pressing the touchscreen icons and making it feel like an appliance and not yet another ubuntu/windows desktop device.

So sticking with the joggler OS, so far I've added telnet to the device using the method described here: http://[please don't link to the fake wiki]/index.php?title ... ing_Telnet

I then used the "birdlikewires" install of squeezeplay - very impressed with that as I am an existing Squeezeplayer user.
I've also installed spoyser's BBC Iplayer (september version) app and "youtube v1.2" - thanks spoyser these are superb!

Now like others I was consider how (if at all possible) to make the joggler a bed side clock and want to be able to turn the display completely off.
I read that its possible to run "plug n pimp" to customise the joggler, but my concern is that it will attempt to enable telnet, which I've already enabled, so will it screw the joggler up?

Finally I'd like to say that I think that Iplayer and Squeezeplay are essential apps to really make the joggler useful and ask what other apps are there that other people consider essential? Are there are media players that can be loaded on to the native OS? Is it possible to make the native OS browse windows shares to open media?

If I remember correctly, plugnpimp checks for an already enabled telnet.
Give it a try.

Maybe you might read the topics for recovering a bricked joggler. That's really not difficult and a good way to restore the joggler if anything should go wrong.

There is already a basic network-enabled media player installed in the stock OS. If you click on the "Tools" icon and select "Connect and Play" you should see a list of available network shares. If you click on one it should open to another list with (working from memory here) Photos, Music and Video. Choosing one of these options will allow to choose content by folder or other criteria.

Quoting from the Joggler Quick Start Guide:

"Your O2 Joggler recognises the most common audio file types: MP3, WAV, WMA.
Please note that the O2 Joggler doesn’t play iTunes music files."

"It also plays many video file types: MPEG-2, MPEG-4 part 2, MPEG-4 part 10 (H.264), WMV 9, DivX, VC1, FLV.
When you’re watching a video, you may need to tap it to expand it to the largest possible size."

There's a great little tutorial on the stock OS at http://o2.co.uk/o2jogglerhelp which has instructions on Connect and Play. Not all the steps mentioned in the tutorial were necessary for me though; it found my NAS drive automatically.

Thanks for the replies so far, have had a quick play with that media player and will have to come back to that.

Does anyone know if installing Plug N Pimp actually installs anything or alters anything by default apart from Telnet?

Plug'n'Pimp installs a webserver, allowing you to access your Joggler's P'n'P web interface through your computer's web browser. From there you can install/uninstall software from the very simple P'n'P web interface. Don't install the iPlayer app though - spoyser's latest version is much better.

Once you've installed P'n'P you can access the web interface by visiting your Joggler's IP address with your browser. You should receive a message after a successful install (in your Joggler's message box) telling you what this is. You can also get the IP address from the network settings of your Joggler.

If you want to bookmark the P'n'P web interface in your computer browser, make sure you assign the device a static IP. If you have DHCP enabled on your router, the Joggler might be assigned a different IP on re-boot; You will still be able to get the IP address from network settings though.

I installed Plug N Pimp last night, worked out fine, though I must admit I haven't gone back in on telnet to try that yet. Great to have a Opera web browser on the stock OS and to be able to turn the screen off. I'll have a look around to see if there are any other good apps to put on the Joggler, but so far I'm happy with it, thanks all.
