SqueezeBox server, Music from NAS (Samba), which way?

I really want to use my Jogger as my SqueezeBox Server, with the music on a Buffalo Linkstation NAS shared using SAMBA, and also running SqueezePlay. (Yes I'm aware that some folk have managed to run SBS on that box but hacking the NAS with my wife's course work on it is not good for domestic harmony
I've tried this a couple of times using Ubuntu 10.10 BTRFS from Exotica, SqueezeBox server obtained using apt-get, and SqueezePlay from Birds-Like-Wires but after a few days ended up with a locked up Joggler both times - it's fine with Native O/S and BLW's SqueezePlay.
I have noticed that the Ubuntu complains about not being able to update due to a corrupt Package Library file so maybe I've got a bad download, or a dodgy USB stick (tiny HP v165w one I saw recommended here), or the Linux PC I'm writing it from is causing an issue (it take a VERY long time).
I know about PnP but I'm currently quite happily running 7.6.1 SBS and I believe PnP's maintainer has other things in his mind right know (good luck!) so that is stuck with an older SBS - I also like the USB stick route as it leaves a working Native O/S and SqueezePlay (has anyone put the Native O/S on to a stick? - must do a search
I have Ubuntu 10 (server - no GUI currently, but initially I had the desktop version, GUI and all) running on a very old PIIIm sub-notebook in 256Meg of RAM originally getting music from the HDD (it all just fitted on 40Gig) but now from the NAS using SAMBA - so I'm confident that this can work on a Jogger and that familiarity is why I chose Ubuntu 10.
Before I take make attempt three I thought I'd canvas the views round here about how other people have achieved this...
Other images, different USB sticks, download the .deb file, different SBS, any info/suggestions are welcome?
Thanks.
