SqueezeBox server, Music from NAS (Samba), which way?

Post by multiplex »

I really want to use my Jogger as my SqueezeBox Server, with the music on a Buffalo Linkstation NAS shared using SAMBA, and also running SqueezePlay. (Yes I'm aware that some folk have managed to run SBS on that box but hacking the NAS with my wife's course work on it is not good for domestic harmony :)

I've tried this a couple of times using Ubuntu 10.10 BTRFS from Exotica, SqueezeBox server obtained using apt-get, and SqueezePlay from Birds-Like-Wires but after a few days ended up with a locked up Joggler both times - it's fine with Native O/S and BLW's SqueezePlay.

I have noticed that the Ubuntu complains about not being able to update due to a corrupt Package Library file so maybe I've got a bad download, or a dodgy USB stick (tiny HP v165w one I saw recommended here), or the Linux PC I'm writing it from is causing an issue (it take a VERY long time).

I know about PnP but I'm currently quite happily running 7.6.1 SBS and I believe PnP's maintainer has other things in his mind right know (good luck!) so that is stuck with an older SBS - I also like the USB stick route as it leaves a working Native O/S and SqueezePlay (has anyone put the Native O/S on to a stick? - must do a search ;-)

I have Ubuntu 10 (server - no GUI currently, but initially I had the desktop version, GUI and all) running on a very old PIIIm sub-notebook in 256Meg of RAM originally getting music from the HDD (it all just fitted on 40Gig) but now from the NAS using SAMBA - so I'm confident that this can work on a Jogger and that familiarity is why I chose Ubuntu 10.

Before I take make attempt three I thought I'd canvas the views round here about how other people have achieved this...
Other images, different USB sticks, download the .deb file, different SBS, any info/suggestions are welcome?

Thanks.

If I was going to do this, I'd do it the way you mention (except I'd use Joli OS these days, just because I prefer the interface). Ubuntu, SBS from apt-get, SqueezePlay and an NFS share from the NAS.

If you're getting package errors like that, I'd point straight to the USB stick.
BirdsLikeWires - Get fresh builds of Debian Bullseye, Bookworm, and Trixie for OpenFrame with the latest 5.10, 6.1, and 6.12 kernels! 8-)

Thanks - Unfortunately the NAS doesn't do NFS (without hacking) so I'll need samba too but that's going fine on the old laptop. (A bit ironic that two linux boxes will have to talk via SMB :-( )
I might look at Joli, as a minimum I'll try Buzz's newer Ubuntu Natty image, as I expect to always have SQP running, the UI is a moot point.

I did initially try a micro SD card in a USB reader - can't remember how that went tough... I seem to remember it was terribly slow - looks like I should try another stick.
Wi;; update when I grab some time to have a go...

I'd definitly recommend Natty over Maverick, 10 had a couple of problems that 11 resolved for me (though i cant quite remember what they were now...).

This page helped me a lot when setting up my samba share.

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Mount ... ermanently

It looks more complicated than it is i think, and, like me, you probably won't want to bother with a credentials file so you can just use the bit at the bottom where it says 'Login without Credentials'

Thanks - I've downloaded Natty, it seems more responsive which I think is a good sign.

I tried that page for to SAMBA client but it didn't work - I'm using a fstab entry like;

Code: Select all

//<server>/<share> <mount point> cifs user=<username>,password=<password> 0 0
and that's working beautifully :-) on the old notebook and the Joggler.

Hopefully I'll grab some time tomorrow night and swap over the server IP addresses (the Duet is a pain when changing servers) then give it a few days and report back (fingers crossed!)

EDIT: and it hung this morning - looks like I need to try a different USB stick - I've found an old USB extension so I'll hack that about so I don't need to go for a small drive...

OK - I'm trying a new USB stick... fingers crossed

I know I read that the volume of the SqueezePlay effects are low on Natty, but I'm not gettign any brightness control either, I can't remember if it worked on my last attempt or not... has anyone else got Backlight brightness control in SQP on Natty?

Well it's been going strong for more than a week :-)

What a difference a USB stick makes!
