Xubuntu 14.04 EOL cannot install ssh server[SOLVED]

Post by rednuht »

Trying to install an ssh server onto my joggler

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install openssh-server
and get errors about python-requests being required and unavailable.

If I run

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update
then ssh is installed and I can reboot and connect but the screen is blank(even after touch) and dmesg reports

Code: Select all

I also tried a new image from http://joggler.exotica.org.uk/ubuntu/ and edited the /etc/apt/sources.list to point to old-releases.ubuntu.com but then loads of packages were unavailable including openssh-server.

This all appears to be related to the fact 14.04 is End Of Life.

is there another way to install a ssh server that does not break the screen?
would I be better off with a different distro?

Re: Xubuntu 14.04 EOL cannot install ssh server

I am currently still using Ubuntu 14.04 32/64 bit boxes with no issues. I do not see any end of life messages with these boxes.

Relating to the Joggler I have had no issues updating the provided 14.04 32 bit builds and those are my base builds.

I did update one with Ubuntu 32bit 14.10 and the video drivers were not there and caused me grief.

I am too now playing with one small little Baytrail quad core Atom running 14.10 64 bit and it is very quick.

Looking at your OP it appears a bit to me like the media is messed up or you have run out of space? Here a few years back went to 8Gb SSD based USB stick then to a 16Gb SSD ZIF drive. That said testing out a very quick 32Gb microSD (MMC) card with the Baytrail CPU box and it too is really quick.

Googling found:
Segmentation fault can also occur under following circumstances:
a) A buggy program / command, which can be only fixed by applying patch.
b) It can also appear when you try to access an array beyond the end of an array under C programming.
c) Inside a chrooted jail this can occur when critical shared libs, config file or /dev/ entry missing.
d) Sometime hardware or faulty memory or driver can also create problem.
e) Maintain suggested environment for all computer equipment (overheating can also generate this problem).

Thanks for the quick reply, TL;DR; It works.

Why did I think it was EOL? After reburning the same image to the same 4GB stick and seeing the same errors. I googled around and found http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.p ... 39539.html which matched my issues almost exactly and I put 2 and 2 together and got 5. That post is of course for Xubuntu 13.04.

I followed your advice and tried a 16GB stick and the only thing I did differently was to not reboot the Joggler but to always shut it down and disconnect the power. After that worked (got same 404 errors but apt-get update fixed them, then screen worked fine) I re-burned the same image to the same 4GB stick.

I expected one of two things to happen. Either the stick would fail int he same way as the last two times or becuase I was now following my power off regime it would work in the same way as the 16GB stick. What I did not expect was for it to install openssh-server without ANY errors and then just work flawlessly.

It does look like that at some time the stick was corrupt or at least in a bad state, it also appears that the specific repositories were not available, though I would have expected that to cause different problems.

Anyway, my Joggler is very happy !

For those that don't know, 14.04 (also known as Trusty Tahr) is a long term service release and is fully supported until 2019. It's what SQPOS and the Reflash tool are based on; not that the reflash tool needs the support, but it's nice to have for SQPOS.
