Running LMS on a dedicated Joggler

Post by jaydee999 »

Hi guys
It's been a while since I've been on the forum: a whole host of reasons why, which I won't bore you with :| :| . However, I'm back for further help / advice / pointing in the right direction threadwise :?: :?: .
I've been running a number of Jogglers (some Squeezeplay dedicated, some within pnpIII), and two Squeezebox Radios for a while now, with LMS running on my NAS (ZyXEL NSA320). The NAS has died, and is way outside its warranty period, so I need to buy another one. I don't want to buy the same model, even if it's still available, because it wasn't that fast, and has been resuscitated twice before, and was itself a replacement for the same original model that died after only 2 months.
I want to stick with LMS for streaming music throughout the house, because I like it, I have the Apple apps for it and all the hardware in place, and can't afford/justify Sonos or anything similar. Trouble is that because LMS is deemed "legacy" software, and has been EOL'ed by Logitech themselves, a lot of new NAS's don't support it natively. So my questions are these:
1. Does anyone know of any new NAS that does support LMS? Preferably reasonably fast, reliable see point above), and under or not too much over £100 empty.
2. If not, is it easy to set up a Joggler with LMS running on it, and with the music held on a new NAS that doesn't support LMS? I have dabbled at beginner level with Linux, and used telnet/Putty/SSH to a small degree on my current jogglers.
3. Is it easier to do this if the Joggler is running dedicated SqP OS, rather than pnpIII?
4. Is there a thread anywhere that has a "walk-through" on how to do this, if it isn't a "walk in the park", so to speak? I had a quick scroll through the threads, but didn't see anything specifically about setting it up, only about problems running it :D :D .

Thanks in advance.

The most problematical part of using an external NAS for file storage is discovering the correct network file path to where the files are stored. Theoretically, it should be easy if the nas uses the cifs/samba protocol - in practice, there are nas units out there which can prove difficult.

There isn't a simple step-by-step guide - but apart from the above - it's not too difficult to set LMS up.

People here will help - just research the nas aspect carefully. You don't need a nas which has specific LMS support.

Looking seriously at the Netgear ReadyNAS RN102, because:
1. It's around the £100
2. It gets good expert and user reviews
3. The HDD's from my old NAS are compatible (once formatted)
4. My son has an earlier version (Duo), and has been very happy with it
5. Seems to be relatively quiet

Just trying to check conclusively if it runs cifs/samba protocols, but I would have thought so.

Has cifs by default.
