OBD 2 success

Post by hawsey »

I bought a cheap 8.99 delivered OBD2 Adapter for the car for a mess around with, partly to see how well the car is running and partly because "gadget fever " kicked in :-).

So it arrived pretty quick and I was going to use it on my Sony Experia P Using the app Torque.
Plugged it in to the car but no joy, it would pair to Bluetooth but not connect ;my initial thoughts were it was the OBD2 adapter so did a bit of googling and found it was either a dud unit or a Jellybean incompatibility with it.
Was going to ask for a refund but thought I would give it a go on my daughters Gingerbread HTC and low and behold wallop it hooked up right away B-)

So not wanting to downgrade my phone I tonight tried a Joggler running Android 123 with a one of these Bluetooth usbs

But no good :-/
Had a rummage and found one of these

And yeehaa it hooked up no problem running Torque,
Very excited indeed

Ooops pictures are all the wrong way around, will sort out later ,the black poundland Bluetooth was the one that worked, the ObD2 is the bottom picture.

For those that dont know what I am on about OBD2 is a socket a bit like a Scart that all modern cars have that spits out all sorts of car data like revs, speed, Fuel economy etc, it can even store your journey data

The mad thing is I cant get my Sony ex p to work with the Torque app that this elm237 OBD 2 adapter uses it pairs with the phone but when the app is started it asks for the pairing code again and again.
With my daughters phone running Android GB it hooks uo no problem
With the Joggler and 1.2.3 Android, no problem (after I had the right Bluetooth adapter in)
After googling it I had it down to an Android ics and jb Bluetooth bug but to throw a spanner in the works I got my mate to try it with his Samsung S4 running jb and it works no problemo.
So now its looking like the phone!!
Anyway its working great on the Joggler :-)

I have one and it works great on my Samsung S3.

The instant MPG on my car is a bit scary though.

I got the settings messed up on mine and according to the torque display on the Joggler I get 255 mpg B-)
I would love to think so but alas I think not.
Trying to work out how to share GPS on my phone through the Android 1.2.3 and Torque :I see the You Tube vid where the guy uses this method as satnav using Google maps on this sort of set up so it must work..
