Thank-you mickchip!

Yup; looking for the fastest with an Intel chip and most features and cheapest.

So ideally a 1.3Ghz one with all of the bells and whistles. Which specific model would that be?

I am doing this concurrently with trying to get a new micro Intel CPU based PC with an Intel processor that is a bit faster than the Intel I3 but in a tiny motherboard almost the size of the Intel Nuc. Not sold here in the US yet.

I want it to work with Wintel and Linux; but most likely will leave it at Linux.

I have just proved this is not for amatures like me :? i have just killed my poor betting Joggler

Mickchip , you were right it just needed me to put in a space !! it is very picky ...
after putting the space in the correct place i was then able to see the coreboot.rom come up but again it said path not found so i just continued typing through the commands to the end and reboot but then nothing ;
so i unplugged the power and a quick flash on the screen and nothing but darkness ,
i have tried this a couple of times and to no avail !! also tried ssh and telnet but nothing , also booting the Reflash tool but no good , arghh , so i am now looking for my spare Efi chip that was swapped out previously to try fix a Joggler that would not hold its stock image ,
i know it is somewhere safe !!!

The weird thing is , i was starting to enjoy all this tinkering ..........

UPDATE ...
I have the shark :D

not sure why it took this long to show up but it looks like i have the bios modded now yippeeeee , thanks for all the help so far guys , going to try my w8.1 stick now

Great news Gary!

If you want to go back to the EFI boot; its really easy with the Bios prompts you see in the coreboot/Seabios.

Thanks Pete, i was relieved when it finally came up :-)

Not having a lot of success booting an os yet though , i had win 8.1 written to a 4gb usb stick and it tried to boot as i got the spinning wheel and the Windows graphic but took ages and then said it needed to reboot , i tried a few times to boot with it trying a different hub etc but no good .

Taking notice of Mickchips success with the DSL cd , i wrote a bootable usb stick with DSL on and voila it booted straight to the startup screen of dSL , i pressed F3 and selected the VGA=786 thing and the boot continued with two linux penguins coming up at the top but then failed saying something about keyboard not detected , i tried two but just the same
So so far this is as far into a boot as i have got

Next i tried to write the W8.1 to my small external HDD and it does virtually the same as before , only quicker , with a message saying your pc needs to re start and it just hangs , and then another saying after multiple boot attempts it needs repaired and another saying the kernel is missing .....
It sometimes lets me press f8 but if i select anything , say Safemode , again it just hangs .

Pete , is your image the same as the one from the torrent sites off Mick or did you build it yourself ? as i have parts 4 , 5 and 6 and will downloa the first three if its any different .

I might try XP , as i notice i have a Mevi XP on my pc , would you know if this would boot on this bios ? or would i have to alter it or would it be best to start again with a new xp build ?

While i am typing the win 8.1 got a little further to the User screen for a sec but then flashed up the sad face and crashed out again .:-( just like that

Yup.

I had issues booting from a USB hub and anything plugged into it. I also had issues booting up off a regular boot stick. That said I was able to get one clean boot once using a regular USB stick plugged inside of the Joggler and using a keyboard/mouse outside. The touch screen works really well such that you can boot up from the external USB port.

Here too will be trying the DSL shortly.

Yes the image is the same as the torrent file. I just broke it up into 500Mb chunks. Just uploaded the first three back to dropbox.

Here is the link:

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/srsupnwdrdhb9md/KC5BDpgQen

Note that if you see an error about booting it does take a little bit to study the error and reboot. I have just left it alone. Sometimes it will reboot a couple of times.

You can utilize Mevi's build. It works well. You have to remove the custom EFI stuff; but its no big deal. Just remove the first EFI partition, check to make sure that the NTFS partition is set to boot and rename all of the files that are custom for EFI. I think there is only 2-3 of them. I will look.

The above noted and if you utilize a ZIF PATA drive you can boot up off a regular XP boot disk and install XP regular on to the PATA connected drive.

I am currently testing the W81 build with an 8Gb USB SSD stick and its working OK; but currently its full and I cannot do anything more with it.

The minimum MS referenced size for a 32bit Windows 8.1 build is 16Gb (20Gb for a 64bit build). That said you could just utilize the boot W81 disk and a 16Gb ZIF connected SSD and build a mini W81 setup that way. It should work. ( I have not tried this yet - Mickchip would know).

You can also fit a USB to ZIF to ZIF SSD drive into the Joggler and that will work and provide you with more space. Goofing around a while back did have an SSD to USB plus the wireless stick inside of the Joggler; a bit tight but it fit. I did add another USB port inside to test this.

The regular USB stick was a bit too fussy.

Gen II retro Openframe 1.0 includes the ZIF Pata board among other stuff; it is identical to the O2 Joggler.

BTW my initial playing was on Ubuntu 13.X and using Virtualbox.

Might go ahead and try to do what Mickchip did with Winreducer 8.1.

Hawsey

Did I read in an earlier post that you used a 4gb stick, no wonder you were having touble booting it,
the image when uzipped is 4.7gb, use an 8gb stick.

Pete

How about one of these.

Thank-you Mickchip.

Today (it was a deal) I am using (a few of these) Aopen boxes (digital engines) for my XBMC boxes. My very first MCE computer though was the Aopen Mini PC with a tiny mini pcie tuner. Later found a deal from an advertising company and purchased the digital engines. They are doing well and built very robustly.

Kind of getting tired of playing around with ARM CPU's and Linux; (over the years lately). That is me. Such that I am going back to Intel and been trying to get this one; I've seen the motherboard price now at some $60; but they are not selling it here in the US yet.

It is a tad larger than the NUC. Its still really tiny.

Very neato. Yup; here always into hardware stuff; from the early days of playing I guess.

Its almost a little civil war going on within Intel relating to the fastest and bestest Atom, Celeron and I series CPU. Here too using the Atom like AMD CPU for my 8 drive NAS with an SAS modded 8 port Sata 3 controller (hack of an IBM1015). I like the Atom better but I like the Asus AMD motherboard better than the similiar Intel one.

The celeron above is clocking faster than the newest I3 right now; but folks are saying wait until the newest Atom comes out that will clock even faster...can't keep up with this stuff....that said I want to get the above one for $100 and $5 for shipping from China; well thinking that is fair.

What I am noticing though are my personal conflicts relating to the ARM CPU versus everybody else relating to whatever OS.

That looks lush Mick, but I think right now I need something like a HP microserver
http://www.ballicom.co.uk/704941421-hp- ... 82339.html
A mate of mine had got one running as a nas with W7 Xbmc 24/7 and he just loaded it up with the hdds he had in caddys; it does not look pretty like the ones you and Pete have posted but it is tempting to sort all my crap in one box :-)

A bit of Joggler Seabios success this evening, I put a fresh copy of W8.1 on my hdd and stuck it in my Joggler and just left it as you suggested Pete and hey presto, it booted right in to the Desktop, I managed to have a good play with it, and its pretty fast, I was surprised :-o I got the wireless connected and at the point of a search in Explorer, it crashed out on me and will not boot again!! Lol more playing tomorrow night. .
Just for fun I made up a Openelec (xbmx) installer key and tried to boot that and it booted to this
Then this

It got no further but I didnt expect even this,
I could not get it to boot with a keyboard plugged in to a hub, two keyboards tried so I was not able to make a selection to see what happened.
Fun and games

Got 32bit Win8.1 installed into VMware today in UEFI mode, we could be getting closer to Win8.1 on the joggler without coreboot / seabios.

I still wonder why Openframe chose the EFI route versus the legacy BIOS route for the Openframe device other than maybe having some indirect ties to Apple and calling this device an IPad / IPhone killer....for a reason no doubt....really its all basic human nature...someone was pissed off....and that essentially was the drive....note that this is my opinion only and nothing more....

That looks promising mick , would it be better using efi or just easier for most people ?
Are your coreboot images of 8.2 solid ? Mine looked great and seemed OK but crashed :-(
Is there anything I should do once I get it booted again to make it more stable ?

My install is extreemly stable, it's been left on 24/7 for 4 days now no problems, touchscreen is very responsive it's actually very usable. It would make it easier for other people using EFI
however it may mean having to use the pata port as I don't know whether it would work from usb, time will tell.
It may not work at all but its the challenge that keeps us going.

Ah, magic! How is the boot system organised for that? Would I need to do anything special to get it booting an Ubuntu / GRUB combo?

Thanks , yes I think that's what I will be doing , I'm still trying to work out which Joggler will be my music serving in ,
Ideally I would like to be able to easily add/remove /edit music from my collection from a joggler running sqos or xbmc not sure what yet and have it running 24/7 .
I have a tiny 750gb HDD that I will be utilizing for the job and also not sure if I should have the os booting on there as well as the music?
What are others doing ?

More coreboot / seabios messing tonight I think :-)
