Wow Pete ,
You put me to shame , you have had good success here ,
Since my last post with limited success running PMS on top of Mint I tried and failed to get Xubuntu on to my usb stick , not sure what went wrong but tried several times to get it to boot and no luck so I need to re download and start again !
I don't know about ssh etc (I know I should ) so a minimal linux build with a desktop will be needed with the thermal trip thing set and also for good measure some sort of heat sink I can find to fit .
I feel confident it can work now just serving to one device tho ....
My interest to use this for myself in some way just for music is also stirred after seeing how easy it is to stream remotely .
I tried the plexbmc add on Pete also and it works very well.

As has been said , I think this on to of squeezeplay os but with a desktop would be great but I lack the skills to do this .

Pete if you fancy a Now tv box I will send one over for you if you want but to be honest it sounds like what you have will be better also it needs some sort of DNS thing set up for the US which might cost monthly (in a previous post)
Let me know how you get on and thanks for the detail in your reply as ever :-)

Pete , if this was set up on a Joggler without a Desktop can you see how easy it is and how to just then access the Plex Media Server from say a Tablet or Laptop by typing the PMS ip address in to the top bar of a Browser ?

If this is pretty easy to achieve then the need for a desktop is not there then i suppose.

I just think i would find it difficult on initial set up as once it is set up i could just add channels etc once in a while when i visit my folks where the PMS will be left on .

Setting up without a desktop will be a doddle, if you enable SSH, other than the initial install (which I posted the commands for), everything else you should be able to do through the browser. I will try and run through the setup on sqPOS and give you a step by step.

@hawsey,

Thank-you for your offer.

Yup here using the little XBMC boxes. They are doing OK. I did install one at my sister-in-law's home and that one too has done well.

Unrelated / related I am using a PFSense firewall here (well now with 6 interfaces) and an older DD-WRT'd Buffalo wireless AP/Router at my sister-in-laws house.

The above set up was done only using an SSH remote to the Joggler. The validation / configuration that I did was only via the browser connection.

IE: the Joggler sits on the workbench and it was not physically looked at two floors up.

Relating to the Windows (any OS) to Joggler connection here utilize Putty (for SSH) and WinSCP. WinSCP provides you with an explorer like interface and a way to edit a text file which is a bit different than the use of a command line editor like nano. Jogglers are resilient and you cannot break them.

I've replied to your other post but when you type the password it looks like its doing nothing, just type the password and press enter.

If I installed PMS via sudo apt ( not sure how yo do that yet ) would it open up that program ? if so then I would not need a desktop would I ?
All I need is plex server on here now and to be able to put a few settings in .

@Hawsey,

Here's how to install Plex Media server using Apt...
jimeney wrote:If you are using Linux Mint, the following should give you working Plex Media Server:
Ubuntu
For Ubuntu installation, add this to your /etc/apt/sources.list file:

deb http://plex.r.worldssl.net/PlexMediaServer/ubuntu-repo lucid main
Then add the repository key:

$ cd ~/
$ wget http://plexapp.com/plex_pub_key.pub
$ sudo apt-key add plex_pub_key.pub
$ rm plex_pub_key.pub
Then install with the following command:

$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install plexmediaserver
However, I think given the hardware constraints (even my N54L is underpowered (1419 CPU Mark Score), the Atom in the Joggler scores 222) you will need to go command line only - the overhead of the desktop, no matter how small, will impact your performance.

Have you reconsidered installing SqueezePlay OS to the eMMC and removing SqueezePlay?

@jimeney giving this all a go again tonight , so far I have managed to get past the joggler / joggler password and then got to superuser , root I think it is called and am busy doing the updates to linux using your previous instructions , taking quite a while but working through as I type .
After this finishes I will attempt the PMS install as per your instructions above :-)
A couple of questions
Can I get PMS to auto boot so it comes on straight away on power up? That is so the program starts and I see it on my Joggler screen or will I need a desktop installed for that ?

Another question I want to do the thermal psv = 80 change but when I type the change in how do I save it and exit , apologies if this was already answered .
Many thanks .

I looked at this way to install PMS but didn't quite understand the first bit about adding to your /etc/apt/sources list file [URL[/URL] , do you just type it in and hit enter like the other commands ?

So because I was unsure I am giving the instructions for the desktop a try first .

Hawsey,

Try with WinSCP for Wintel.

Code: Select all

http://winscp.net/eng/index.php?#utm_source=winscp&utm_medium=app&utm_campaign=5.5.3
1 - Go to the subdirectory /etc/apt
WinSCP-1.jpg
2 - click on the /etc/sources.list file to edit
WinSCP-2.jpg
3 - or with SSH just:

Code: Select all

login as: joggler
joggler@192.168.244.229's password:
Welcome to Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS (GNU/Linux 3.2.58joggler1 i686)

 * Documentation:  https://help.ubuntu.com/

1 package can be updated.
1 update is a security update.

Last login: Mon Jul 28 15:58:03 2014 from 192.168.244.230
joggler@ICS-Ubuntu-229:~$ cd /etc/apt
joggler@ICS-Ubuntu-229:/etc/apt$ ls
apt.conf.d  preferences.d  sources.list  sources.list.d  trustdb.gpg  trusted.gpg  trusted.gpg~  trusted.gpg.d
joggler@ICS-Ubuntu-229:/etc/apt$ sudo su
joggler@ICS-Ubuntu-229:/etc/apt$ nano sources.list
root@ICS-Ubuntu-229:/etc/apt#
root@ICS-Ubuntu-229:/etc/apt#
SSH-2.jpg

4 - in your SSH terminal connection then:
cd ~/
$ wget http://plexapp.com/plex_pub_key.pub
$ sudo apt-key add plex_pub_key.pub
$ rm plex_pub_key.pub
5 - then while still in your SSH terminal connection type:
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install plexmediaserver

Thanks Pete , this is all new to me so do I do this from a pc ?
I tried to install the desktop and it all seemed good but how do you get the desktop to open ? Should it open up automatically when I re boot ? If I can get the desktop going I will just go to the website and download PMS from there .

Yes.

Easiest to just install Putty from here on your wintel desktop first and use SSH to download and install Plex.

Its way easier to do this via SSH.

You can do it on the Joggler too if you have a terminal session open. Just do a sudo su before you edit and install Plex.

That said easy also to do this remotely with a windows RDP session to the Joggler.

BTW to install windows RDP on the Joggler just do:

1 - ssh to the Joggler
2 - sudo su
3 - apt-get install xrdp
4 - go to your wintel PC and RDP to the Joggler using joggler / joggler to log in.

Here are some images from an RDP session from a Wintel PC to the Joggler.
RDP-1.jpg
RDP-2.jpg
RDP-3.jpg
Once it is installed it will run by itself and should autostart on reboot. Then just go to the browser and make your changes to it.

Code: Select all

http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/download.html
1 - Click on Putty to open it
2 - put in the host name of the Joggler on the top
3 - put in the host name in the saved sessions box and save
4 - click on the open box on the bottom
5 - type in your name and password (joggler and joggler)
6 - do a sudo su
7 - then cd to /etc/apt
8 - do an "ls" to make sure you are in the apt directory
9 - then type nano sources.list
10 - cursor down to the bottom of the file
11 - put your stuff there
12 - hit control x and save file
13 - continue with the rest above

Cheers Pete , to be honest that looks above me (this probably all is :-)) if I can I would like to get this up and running on my joggler direct if I can .
So far I managed to get logged in , get root ,update the build , install the minimal desktop , set the thermal psv to 80 so I am happy for tonight and off to bed soon .
I still need to work out how to actually open the desktop I installed , what do I type to open it up ?
Install plex server
Work out how to have PMS auto start without having to type Joggler/Joggler every time .
Thx guys

Just type "startx" to bring up the x windows you installed on the Joggler.

You must be in a terminal session while on the Joggler and have a keyboard and mouse plugged into the Joggler.
