**BUILD 3 - Windows XP Professional SP3 (Plus Tablet PC)**
Re: BUILD 2 - Windows XP Professional SP3 (Plus Tablet PC)
Geez, I forgot I can also utilize the little ZIF drive to do the same.

Re: BUILD 2 - Windows XP Professional SP3 (Plus Tablet PC)
I had enough room on the USB SSD stick for the image; so I just copied the image to the external USB SSD drive and now restoring that same image to the internal SSD stick. The XPSP3 setups I've configured on the 8Gb sticks are really only using maybe 5 Gb so far...the image is only 2.7 Gb.
Looks to be working fine so far.
I also took Joggler #2 apart and put the USB SSD inside of it removing the WLAN card.
Noticed that I had to change the EFI to the nohub mode to get it to boot inside. Not really an issue .

That's odd, isn't it. Funny thing, this Joggler. O_opete_c wrote:Noticed that I had to change the EFI to the nohub mode to get it to boot inside. Not really an issue .
How quick is XP on a ZIF HDD? Is it worth me getting one?

should be about the same as a 2.5" hdd, just less power consuming.
Fullscreen squeezeplay windows, server 2003, foshiz mini v1 and v2, (and a few broken builds) :P so far.....

Re: BUILD 2 - Windows XP Professional SP3 (Plus Tablet PC)
The XP is faster on the ZIF than the USB SSD. Small too; size of a large business card with a micro USB / LED port to one side. Very tight fit; most concern was bending (folding) the ZIF cable in such a manner such that it would break. The clip to hold the ZIF cable is tiny and when you are unclipping it; its like you want be somewhat gentle with it; so you don't break it. The only reason I got the ZIF drive case though was that I was testing the ZIF drive just sitting open; connected to a open board with a ZIF and USB cable connector on it. I already had the ZIF drive spare from an IPOD sitting around.
The IDE drive I was testing with is actually a 1/2 2.5" mini IDE drive. I've never seen one like this before. So its really about the same size as the ZIF drive with an IDE connector on one of it. Its a bit thicker than the ZIF drive though. This drive is not in a case but rather just connected to one of the multidrive USB cable thingys. Funny though with all the laptops I've had over the years, never saw one of these. Purchase then originally for my CarPCs.
Still though it would be too tight to try to fit one of these inside of the Joggler. Even a CF card is almost too big. Unless you just velcroed it to the back of the Joggler. I was actually going to remove the metal stand; reshape such that it is flat, reattach it and hang the Joggler on the wall with what ever do what I can make to hang it on the wall. I started looking and you can buy a two led light RJ-45 solderable socket to replace the one on the joggler; a but of work though and probably not worth the effort for a couple of LED indicator lights.

Re: BUILD 2 - Windows XP Professional SP3 (Plus Tablet PC)
Yes, the gap between the screen backlight and the motherboard is not much at all - is that where you have put yours?. Even my time spent with my Shuttle XPC SFF didnt prepare me for such a cramped space. I've seen ipod hdds & similar on ebay so I'll see if I can get a cheap one.
I'm on the lookout for a more robust boot media. I'm sure I've worn out my 2 month old £30 16GB Lexar with all the excessive writes. It's gotten VEEEERY slow. The rubbery Corsair Flash Voyager is still going strong at 2 years old.

Using a drive connected by ZIF, I expect that USBoot isn't needed.
I'm keeping my metal stands as they are: Both mine have a HDD suspended on a rubber band stretched across the stand.

Never tried an inside mounting of the ZIF drive. I did purchase it for a deal on Ebay though. It is quick.

Re: BUILD 2 - Windows XP Professional SP3 (Plus Tablet PC)
The ipod hard drives on the bay go for about 20-30 quid, was looking into it but not much storage for your money, most probably 20-30gig, but with these its size that matters as they are tiny, and read write speed are about the same as any hdd, so fast lol. I do not own but researched them quite a bit as an xp boot media and think theyh would be one of the best bets.

Oh, and i think that the patched ntldr expects a usbooted windows xp, but you could also inject xpe usb boot files into the build to get around that on a hdd

Re: BUILD 2 - Windows XP Professional SP3 (Plus Tablet PC)
I think the one I have is a 30Gb one. Wrapped a bit up with that yellow tape and out of the case you could maybe fit it inside of the Joggler. I did purchase a short 4" micro USB to USB connector for that purpose. The ZIF to USB board would have no problems fitting in the USB WLAN area of the Joggler. Having the internal USB be the 2ndary USB port makes it easy to update externally. 30 Gb would be a good size for multiple partitions; IE: Android and Linux plus XP would fit nicely on it. Even though just velcroed to the back of the Joggler wouldn't be too bad.

Re: BUILD 2 - Windows XP Professional SP3 (Plus Tablet PC)
I think I'll pass if I can't get it to fit inside. For one my Jogglers, I'll be using a 1TB 2.5" external drive for streaming from, the other Joggler for music playback. I've looked at a CF and a small ZIF adaptor. Might fit the adaptor in the gap around the internal USB port and the CF between the backlight and motherboard. I've had a thought of making a spacer to put between the 2 halves of the case to give me a few extra millimetres.
Dan, how did you get on with booting from the Zipad HDD? I didn't get it booting XP from the XBOX360 HDDVD rear ports either. Other OS will boot, Ubuntu and Android do happily. Fussy ol' XOJ.

Re: BUILD 2 - Windows XP Professional SP3 (Plus Tablet PC)
I purchased a couple of these. The footprint is bigger than just the micro USB/ZIF board. The CF piece pins make it bigger. What actually is really even thinner is the little PCIE adapter with just the ZIF cable clip and the pin outs for the USB connector. Its really flat such that you could just insulate it and run bare cables for the USB connector to the WLAN port inside of the Joggler. I purchased these to test inside of the Asus 900A.CF and a small ZIF adaptor
The most difficult piece is really the ZIF connector and using it without breaking it. You could most likely put the concoction all on the WLAN side of the Joggler and maybe press fit the ZIF drive underneath the MB wrapped up such that it doesn't short anything out. I'm waiting for a practice bits and pieces of a Joggler; but I could test with one of the working Jogglers to see the fit.

well don't take any risks with your jogglers!!!! Can the ZIF cables be folded? Can they be found in longer lengths?

Re: BUILD 2 - Windows XP Professional SP3 (Plus Tablet PC)
Going slow here Mevi.
When I have taken it apart in pieces I am always concerned with the Joggler cables. Yes the ZIF cables can be folded as I've already done that and I have a few ZIF cables but they are all the same length. It must be some standard.
I'll give it a try with the current on the desk Joggler today. They well constructed; in so much as I haven't broken any clips when taking them apart.

Here's a picture of the pieces of HW I have to play with. The ZIF drive is the largest. Its thin. I'm wondering now if they make smaller ZIF drives these days?

Re: BUILD 2 - Windows XP Professional SP3 (Plus Tablet PC)
If anyone works out how to get a hd/ssd running from the zif connector inside the joggler and without loosing the wifi and being able to close the case, would they be so kind to post a howto guide or pics please

Re: BUILD 2 - Windows XP Professional SP3 (Plus Tablet PC)
Verg0, I was able to fit the ZIF drive inside; but it involves some quantum physics; little tiny particle accelerator and a "flux capacitor".
You don't even know its inside of the Joggler.
So really best right now is the SSD USB stick. Maybe a 16/32 Gb one would be better though inside of the Joggler.
Now that I have taken apart this one though will be putting the USB SSD stick inside anyways. Boots fine with the both of them in the USB ports.

Re: BUILD 2 - Windows XP Professional SP3 (Plus Tablet PC)
There is a how to on the jogglerwiki of how to solder up a couple of extra ports. One is USB2.0, the other is USB1.1. You'd need to be good at soldering, or know someone who can do it for you. I found it really fiddly, but I'm not good at soldering. I also got the power from the wrong USB socket - the guide DOES tell the best place to solder onto, I just thought I knew better.verg0 wrote:If anyone works out how to get a hd/ssd running from the zif connector inside the joggler and without loosing the wifi and being able to close the case, would they be so kind to post a howto guide or pics please
