Hello Roobarb,
Did you ever get any of your 3 ebay Jogglers to boot from the internal flash?
If so, how?

Re: Reflashing Tool for the O2 Joggler
I just reflashed one of my working Jogglers twice, the first time I got 0+1954 and the second time I got 0+1944, so I guess that number not staying constant isn't an indication of a problem.cbredfred wrote:After reading some of the previous comments in this thread that talk about having to reflash 6 or 7 times before it finally works I decided that I'd sit and watch the telly whilst repeatedly reflashing my jogger, giving it 30 minutes to reboot after each reflash.
After 3 reflashes it still stuck on the O2 logo screen. However I did notice that the number reported at the end of " rebuilding boot partition" changes each time. I had 0+1949, 0+1950 and the last reflash (it had to recreate the partition layout) it came up with 0+1944.
Shouldn't this number remain constant seeing as its reflashing the same content/files each time?
Re: Reflashing Tool for the O2 Joggler
Nope, never did, although I haven't really had much chance to investigate.cbredfred wrote:Did you ever get any of your 3 ebay Jogglers to boot from the internal flash?
The furthest I got was using rEFIt to display bootable drives. It couldn't see the internal flash. Odd, but I think this is one of those things I'll have to put on the back burner for a while, as I don't have the time or impetus to dig further at the moment, I'm afraid.

Re: Reflashing Tool for the O2 Joggler
I am stuck on part 2
I got a joggler yesterday and managed to get it into a state where it displays just the OpenPeak logo. I did this by trying to boot into a desktop linux...wasn't really thinking...
I managed to create the image on the usb stuck but now my computer won't mount it.
I am using Kubuntu 11.10 and I can see the drive in Partion Manager, and have formated one of the drives and tried a third time but I can't get it to mount. The md5sum of the .gz is fine.
I have tried two different sticks (2gb and 4gb), both of which have worked to install Linux on two machines.
Trying to mount manually "sudo mount /dev/sdb1 usb" (I have a dir called usb) says I must specify the type
trying "sudo mount -t vfat /dev/sdb1 usb " gives.
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdb1,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
dmesg | tail or so
What have I done wrong?
Is it possible to somehow add the script to the image before putting on the usb stick if I can't moun it?
If someone could point me in the right direction I would be very pleased. I have only had it less than a day and its already broken
!
Cheers
Ian

Re: Reflashing Tool for the O2 Joggler
Does anyone have any ideas why I couldn't make the image correctly and then re mount?
Re: Reflashing Tool for the O2 Joggler
Just a daft possibility, but after writing to the USB stick, did you unplug the stick and then reconnect it? Often after writing, partitions are not properly seen by the OS until after reconnection.IanWood wrote:Does anyone have any ideas why I couldn't make the image correctly and then re mount?

Re: Reflashing Tool for the O2 Joggler
Have you followed all the instructions on the birdslikewires website? http://birdslikewires.co.uk/articles/jogglerflash
You need to write the image using something like Windiskimager (in Windows, not sure what to use on other platforms) to write the image properly with a boot partition. Once you've done that, copy the jogglerflash.sh file into the 'reflash' folder on the stick and copy the O2 image - http://o2.openpeak.co.uk/firmware/app-o ... eimage.tgz - to the 'reflash' folder too. Don't decompress the .tgz file - leave it as it is.
After you've done this, power down the Joggler, plug in the stick and then power it up again. The stick should boot and write the partitions to the Joggler's flash memory. Do not halt the process or cut the power; the Joggler will power itself down after install. Now remove the stick and power up again - voila! a new fresh-faced Joggler.
I did the above myself this morning, to remove all the stuff I don't use on my second Joggler. I only use it for Squeezeplay through my hi-fi. The kitchen Joggler, however, is used for a multitude of things.

Re: Reflashing Tool for the O2 Joggler
Not a daft possibilty at all, sadly I did unplug it and reconnect it, several times.
I also tried to use the built in "create usb startup disk" to copy the image, but it failed without saying why.
This may be a daft possiblity but I assume the image is good?

Re: Reflashing Tool for the O2 Joggler
I've only ever used Windiskimager to write the image to the stick and it works well.
The image itself is obviously fine due to the many reports of success on the forum, but apparently the Joggler is fussy about which USB sticks it will boot from, so you might want to try a different brand (or an SD card in a small USB card reader - that's how I did my first re-flash).

Re: Reflashing Tool for the O2 Joggler
Maybe I could try Windiskimager on a doze machine.
Remember I haven't got to using it in the Joggler yet - the problem is with my PC and usb stick.
I could do with a usb card reader anyway - maybe I could get one and try that.

Re: Reflashing Tool for the O2 Joggler
You're not trying to write the .gz file straight to the stick, are you? You need to decompress it on the fly into dd like this:
If you're just dd-ing the .gz to your USB stick, then it definitely won't work!
Code: Select all
gzip -dc lucid-3.1.9joggler1-r107.img.gz | sudo dd of=/dev/sdX bs=1M

Re: Reflashing Tool for the O2 Joggler
no, I do it the correct way.
I also tried manully unzipping and then
sudo dd of=/dev/sdX bs=1M if=lucid-3.1.9joggler1-r107.img
Which has the same result.
I followed the instructions correctly - infact I think those on the article reference an old .gz, but I did use the correct filename.
The resultant usb would boot, but without the script wasn't as much use.

Re: Reflashing Tool for the O2 Joggler
Daft question, but are you adding the 'jogglerflash.sh' reflash script and O2 image to the 'reflash' folder after writing the image? Your post above doesn't mention that.IanWood wrote:The resultant usb would boot, but without the script wasn't as much use.
I realise that it's image writing you're having problems with but I'm responding to the unsuccessful reflash bit in your quote above.

Re: Reflashing Tool for the O2 Joggler
No, haven't got that far.
I run
gzip -dc lucid-3.1.9joggler1-r107.img.gz | sudo dd of=/dev/sdX bs=1M
Then afterwards my pc won't mount the stick, so I can't put the script on.

Re: Reflashing Tool for the O2 Joggler
Sorry, I edited my last post because I was responding to the bit about the USB booting but you answered before I'd finished editing. I didn't quite understand your quote about the stick booting but I get it now. Sorry for being so obtuse, I'm looking at the forum in between work tasks and really should have read your whole thread rather than the "new posts" before responding.
Is your linux box set to automount devices? If it is, but you still can't get it to mount, have you tried re-booting with the device inserted? Maybe it will be recognised on boot.

Re: Reflashing Tool for the O2 Joggler
No problem - rather have unintentional obtuse responses than none at all!
It does auto mount – I did try to boot the pc with the stick in but it didn't work. But I think I only tried that one.
Maybe there is something specific about my machine, or even than port. – I could try another one later.

Re: Reflashing Tool for the O2 Joggler
If it's a problem specific to your linux setup, try running a live CD distro and see if that will mount your stick. It might work.
Re: Reflashing Tool for the O2 Joggler
ah - thats a good idea. Will try on another machine first. Could also fire up VirtualBox and try that.
Re: Reflashing Tool for the O2 Joggler
I have a working Joggler and have no reason at the moment to reflash it.
But if I did, what are the risks associated with it ?
I'd like to get the O2 "virtual" mobile number and free sms. I saw some where here that if a Joggler is reflashed, this will be offered. I've just has a look over the O2 terms and conditions for the Joggler messaging service and have seen that after 6 months of no-usage, O2 may well close the account. So the prospect of me using the past owners account is unlikely, plus I wouldn't really want to.
So If I reflashed the Joggler would I be offered the ability to get an O2 account, mobile number and free SMS ? Or have O2 pulled this service now, as the last time they sold Jogglers is just under 2 years ago now. The £50 clearance sale was on in April 2010. Nevertheless, there must be some people who bought the Joggler from O2 and use the stock OS and services O2 offered at the time of the sale, including SMS sending and receipt. O2 still have pages on their website for the Joggler.
TIA
