BBC and Youtube Native Flash support?

Post by elvosparsley »

Just got my Joggler up and running with Opera Mobile and SqueezePlayer running very nicely in the native OS, the icing on the cake would be having Flash support in the Opera Browser.
I've tried a lot of the OS' that have flash support, via USB stick but I like the native OS (with tweaks) it just works.
After trawling the web it seems that Opera Mobile 10 doesn't have flash support, but Opera Mobile 11 does(?)
Anybody know if this is still being actively developed and if there's a release timetable?
Total noob with this so sorry if this has been covered before.

If its iPlayer you want spoysers app http://www.jogglerwiki.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=80 provides it.
To my knowledge flash from a browser isnt available.
You can also use the swf manager to run some flash content.

I use xbmc with the iplayer plugin - seems to be best here in terms of bitrate quality and render speed. (Although I do dev the plugin so might be a little biased)

No it was content from the BBC website itself that I'd like to play.
Like this page for example:

I couldn't out find how to run XBMC Live from USB on the Joggler, are there any resources out there?

Re: XBMC Live:
There is a standalone Joggler version of XBMC that can be installed on a USB stick but you need to edit config files to make it find your network if you're connected by wi-fi (its default is ethernet). You can download it from http://www.multiupload.com/4TEJYQ2FW1 - I think you need to use the 'depositfiles' link if you don't have a Megaupload account. 7-zip is probably the best software for handling tar.gz files on Windows.

Instructions on what config tweaks you need to run it are contained in one of my posts on the following thread:

Gave it a try, the two main points going against XBMC are:
1 - No web browser
2 - Slows to a crawl sometimes (probably due to the cpu throttling)
Some of the buttons are very small and unwealdy also.

So looks like I'll have to wait until someone compiles a version of Opera Mobile with flash support, as I like the stability of the native OS more than all the other linux distros that are currently available.
Ho hum.

Some quick answers

1. You can use a launcher plugin to run a web browser from within xbmc.
2. Increase throttle temp and your joggler experience will be better :) for the skin, you can try the "joggler" skin that is more usable but also rather complicated. you can of course boot up maverick or jolicloud and use the browser there also.

If you have a specific "stability" issue with a distro I'd be happy to look into it .

Hi Buzz,
probably a poor choice of words on my part wrt the stability front, it just seems to be a sledgehammer to crack a nut i.e. loading a new os just to access web page flash content i.e. BBC News and Youtube.
Not to say they aren't well done, Linux Mint was my favourite of the lot, but they are designed for desktop and not tablet use.
Maybe Meego will mature on this platform as the interface was much better.
I also don't like the thought of 'over-revving' the Joggler so that it can cope with the OS - "the light that burns twice as bright burns half as long"
If the BBC live streams can be played in the native OS then surely it can't be that much of a stretch for the browser to access similar content?
The native OS with Opera, SqueezePlay, Google Calendar and Weather installed has every thing I need.
Like I say I can put up with no flash because the generous work of individuals out there has already made this a great piece of kit.

jolios is reasonably finger friendly. of course, as soon as you run a desktop app, even meego will have problems.
I don't see booting an os from usb any difference from booting the internal os - in fact usb media can be a lot quicker than the internal flash.

I don't think about it as over-revving either. it's not so it "can cope with the os". the joggler's just run hotter than the acpi set temperature. I've been running mine for months with the throttle temp at 80c with no problems. my 6 year old laptop often used to run at 86c when compiling up code. it is still going. generally the joggler under normal use doesnt get much hotter than 75c anyway, which isnt much more than the default 70c throttle temp.

the bbc streams use much less cpu running within xbmc, as it is rendering using gles (flash is not known for its high performance on linux).

if the native os has everything you need, then enjoy :) personally, I only ever boot into the native os by accident. jolios on both my kitchen and bedroom jogglers.
