Internal USB SSD failure FYI

Post by pete »

Turned on a Joggler last night with an internally mounted XP configured USB SSD. On the first three Jogglers I removed the internal USB WiFi dongle and replaced it with an 8 Gb USB SSD stick. In order to fit the stick inside of the Joggler I had to remove it from its case. This makes it about the same size as the internal WiFi dongle USB board.

This Joggler has been off now for a month or so. The USB SSD device failed to boot.

I tried booting with an external USB SSD drive and it works fine. It does boot fine to the internal O2 OS. Very odd because I can see the USB SSD device showing up in the XP control panel / system / hardware application. But do not see the three partitions configured nor the data on the three partitions.

I am guessing that its a failure of the USB SSD drive; but I'll have to take apart the Joggler / remove the device and check it out. This is the first of five USB SSD's that I have been playing with that may have failed.

Took the Joggler apart and found the USB SSD stick a bit burnt and melted near the USB connections. I wrote to the supplier regarding said issue. I do recall them running a bit hot.

I received an ack from the vendor for a replacement.

Still need 4 more (such that I have one per Joggler); so requesting an additional 3 USB SSD 8 Gb memory sticks.

This way I have one per Joggler to be able to test with.

Hello,

any chance you could tell what USB stick are you using for this? Is it fast enough for system? What transfers are you having?
I'm planning to the same but not sure which USB stick I should buy.

Thanks,

the USB SSD looks like an extra large flash stick, only that the chips are of the same type that you might find in a budget SSD. The ones that have been used by Pete (and melted!) are Kingspec branded. I can't speak from personal experience as mine never arrived from China and the ebay seller wanted another $10 to send another.... grrr negative feedback.

if you search the forum for Kingspec, Pete posted read and write for this particular drive.
