stuck on o2 screen

Post by mlho »

My O2 Joggler is stuck at the opening black screen with the O2 logo.

I've tried the birdslikewires link for re-flashing. This runs smoothly, but on powering up again, back to O2 logo only.

What should I do next in terms of trouble-shooting?

Have you left it long enough, it can take quite a while to boot after a reflash 15 to 20 mins on one of mine

Did you add the O2 image file ( http://o2.openpeak.co.uk/firmware/app-o ... eimage.tgz ) as well as the reflash script into the "reflash" folder on the stick? Rather than relying on downloading the image from the web, I've always used a locally stored copy and it has worked every time for me.

Well , it had to happen ,finally i seem to have bricked my Joggler :o
Its stuck on the O2 logo , and wont boot anything from usb stick , i have a few distros that i know boot fine and i used one of those sticks to try the Re flash tool but still no luck .
Next i tried the hub with keyboard and reflash tool , hitting escape constantly but it still stays on the o2 logo , does anyone know if the logo should go trying this method ? anyway even though the logo was still there i tried fs0: then boot.nsh and repeated this powering off ans on up to fs4:
I also tried powering my usb hub as it says this might be better , but apart from white screen issue it made no difference .
Still no luck Arghhh
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated :)
The fact that it will boot nothing is the most worrying thing to me lol

Can you still SSH or telnet into the device? If you can and it will still read from the USB device (I know that is a "big if" when the Joggler won't boot from USB) you might be able to run the reflash script from a terminal.

Also, as mentioned in my earlier post, are you relying on the network to download the Joggler image file? Or are you saving it to the "reflash" directory on the stick? The locally stored method is the one I use.

Not sure as I haven't tried that before, a bit of reading up for me tonight I think! Yes I put all the files on to the stick as in the wiki instructions ,it just stays stuck on o2.
When you try the keyboard and hub method, after hitting escape repeatedly should the o2 logo still be on the screen when you type fs0: etc or not?
If I do manage to telnet / SSH in to joggler how would I start the script from there?
Think I need to really read through the threads lol or maybee some irc chat support, I am a real amateur on this sort of tinkering ..
Many thanks for help so far.

When you hit ESC you have to type blind - you can't see a command line. It is a bit fiddly, but I'd be surprised if your Joggler were dead from what you've described. Very strange!

I haven't had this problem before and haven't tried the keyboard and hub method of restoring an unresponsive Joggler. Is there anybody else on the forum who can advise hawsey from experience?

Even though you've used the USB stick before in the Joggler and it has booted a distro, I'd try another USB stick with the reflash tool as a first option before trying anything else. I couldn't get the reflash tool to work with a Kingston stick that I'd previously booted Ubuntu from. I changed to a small HP stick and everything worked fine.

Have you tried (as roobarb suggests at http://birdslikewires.co.uk/articles/jogglerflash) changing the fs0: bit to fs1: or to fs2: etc. and powering off between attempts? The fs bit is just the device order so another number up the chain might work.

As for running the reflash script using SSH, I can't remember where the Joggler automounts USB devices but it's probably /mnt or /media. I'm nowhere near a Joggler to check.
Assuming that it is /mnt and that you can SSH into your Joggler and have the reflashing USB stick inserted, log into the Joggler from a terminal window on your PC /Mac and type:

cd /mnt/reflash

Then hit the "Enter" key. You are now in the reflash directory. Type the name of the reflash script jogglerflash.sh and hit the Enter key again. If it works, you will see the Joggler doing its stuff in the terminal window. Leave everything alone until the Joggler (hopefully) reboots.

I think the above process is correct but maybe someone else can point out any glaring errors.

I emphasise that the above assumes that:
1) you have SHH (or telnet) enabled on your device
2) that SSH/telnet still works even though the Joggler doesn't fully boot
3) and that the Joggler can still mount USB devices in its present state.

My suspicions are that playing around with the keyboard and hub options will eventually fix your problems. I hope so.

Good luck!

Cheers gegs will try this lot out tonight, I have been using the tablet wired keyboard I bought for the joggler but will fish out an old one from the loft tonight.
Yes I did the escape then fs0: then fs:1 etc up to 4 after power cycling each time.
I would love to know if I should be trying to blind type this with the 02 logo still on the joggler or should hitting escape have changed this screen, anyone know please?
Thx

I think you might have missed my post above; no, you have to type blind with just the boot logo on screen.

So i reformatted my little blue 8 GB HP usb stick using the HP USB disk format tool (this will do the trick for any usb stick)
Attached a keyboard ( a dell one off a pc this time as the tablet one tried previously did not seem to work ),
and my memory stick to the Joggler through an unpowered "Trust" USB hub with the keyboard in slot 1 and the usb key in slot 4.
I turned on my Joggler and immediately began pressing escape repeatedly for around 10 seconds.
I typed fs0: and pressed RETURN. You don't see any text on screen apart from the O2 logo.
I typed boot.nsh and pressed return.
At this point the re flashing tool kicked in and did its magic ( many thanks Roobarb )
If nothing continues to happen, try the above but with fs1:, fs2:, etc.
You may need to power off between attempts.
Thanks to Roobarb for the above

Whilst waiting for my stick to re format and to write the image i tried the above method with a known working Linux Mint image i had on a stick and it booted no problem , so i kind of had an idea i was almost there :D , the only thing different was the full size keyboard .
One happy Easter Bunny tonight , "My Precious Lives "
A bit scary but the more you tinker ,the more satisfying it is when you eventually get there .
Thanks for your help .

Thanks for all the help :D
Just wondering what could have caused this meltdown?
Does this happen to folks just running the stock os too?
I had recently been trying to get a new image to boot.
Also recently been fiddling with a 7 port switchable usb hub , maybee if i accidentaly had two images switched on to boot could that be it ?
Any thoughts
