Joli/Ubuntu OS on USB - more space?

Post by mattjax05 »

I am currently using a 4gb stick with Joli OS on it. I would like to put Joli on an 8gb stick and use some of the remaining space for pics etc. What is the best way to achieve this? On the current 4gb stick it looks as though some form of partition has been made of 3.2gb for the Joli image - would this be the same irrespective of the size of usb stick therefore giving me no more space anyway? Some help please guys. Cheers

You can use GPARTED (comes with UBUNTU for example or you can burn an image with only GPARTED on it and boot from that CD).
After putting the OS image on the stick, use GPARTED to:
- increase the OS partition a bit (ex: 3.2gb to 4 or 5 GB) if you intend to install more software,
- create a specific partition to place images or music files.

Gparted doesn't resize btrfs partitions.

Write the JoliOS partition to your 8gb stick then run the resizebtrfs.sh shell script to make the partition fill the available space. Roobarb gives instructions on this thread:

I tried this with an earlier version of Ubuntu and it didn't work because it didn't have 'btrfs-tools' and 'parted' installed. Make sure that you have these tools installed before running the script.

If you plan to transfer images etc. from the stick to a different OS;

After writing the JoliOS image to an 8GB stick, use Gparted to create a FAT32 partition (e.g 2GB) at the end of the USB stick, leaving unallocated space between the btrfs image and the FAT32 one. After closing Gparted you can boot into JoliOS from the USB stick and run the resizebtrfs.sh script to make the btrfs partition fill the available unallocated space. You should now have a stick with roughly 6GB for JoliOS and a 2GB FAT32 partition to save any files you might want to transfer to another machine.
