Digital Home Server

Post by hawsey »

Hi Guys,
going to look at this tonight , it looks like it was written for a 7" touch screen on a mini pc running XP , i wonder if the Joggler running XP would like it ? Looks cool anyway ....

Hi,

I'm Soitjes, the developer of the Digital Home Server. I'm very much interested in this Joggler, never heard of it before. Curious to see if DHS will work on it. I moved to windows 7 in the meantime, but I still have it running on a mini-itx with XP and the little 7" USB monitor. It works on any screen size, from 7" up to whatever.

I'm curious...

Cheers,

Soitjes.

Grabbing this now, will test it out my joggler tonight, and welcome soitjes, I am sure you will like the joggler, as your application seems to fit it perfectly!

The installer dialogue was a bit too big to fit in the native resolution, but a quick change while connected by VNC helped me past that part. After installed, I connected to localhost:9000 but the webpage spills a bit off the left side of the browser in chrome or IE. I could go through the instructions, but got stuck when adding gadgets to DHS as the list on the left was either not populated or was spilled off the screen. The app itself is really nice looking though.

I probably made a fluff of things somewhere.

As you typed localhost I suppose you ran the browser on the Joggler, but for very small screens it's much easier when you run it from a normal PC or laptop (just substitute localhost with the ip address of the Joggler). Then you can install widgets and modules and do the other configuration. The app itself should nicely fit the screen though.

I build that browser interface because DHS is aimed at touchscreens, and it's kind of difficult to do complex operations without a keyboard (even with a keyboard on screen). So I though it would be easier to do it via a browser.

Soitjes, you're right. That's just what I did. :)

Just the app with the default few buttons looked good on the Joggler. I'll have a second go at getting it going on the Joggler tomorrow. Thanks for the tip.

soitjes,

Looks very nice.

Gave it a try on the Joggler.

When it is installing; it appeared to be downloading the widgets.

But, none of the widgets though show up when configuring them via the browser or the console GUI.

I did not configure it with a google account for the time being.

Ok, when you install widgets you still need to put them on the screen (in contrary to modules, they appear in the docking menu at the bottom of the screen). It's the second button from the right. You will see a little popup showing all the widgets you've installed. Select one, and it will be put on the screen at the default position.

You can then resize, move and configure (when needed). DHS will remember the settings, so every time you start DHS it will put the widget again at the same position.

Soitjes,

The little pop up shows an empty box as does the box to install modules. I have another small touchscreen PC on the desk here. Its also running XP.

Started again with the installation on the Joggler and the generic touchscreen (Atom based). This time I saw it downloading each of the modules that I chose to be installed. I didn't see that before. The same with both computers.

Everything worked on both computers (Joggler and generic).

The touch response is quick.

Very nice.

Here are some pics. I can snapshot the widgets running but cannot see the toolbar via VNC....not an issue.

Well, I'm glad it's working. As a favor, could you make a picture of the Joggler running DHS with a digital camera and send that to me (instead of a screenshot) ? Then I can put that on my website

I'm a bit surprised with the Wakeup module. I don't see the blue background, instead it's grey. But in the timer module it's ok.

Now that it does run on the Joggler : are those still for sale ? Or should I look on eBay for a second hand one ?

Cheers,

Ebay, or look in the marketplace section, this is a nice piece of software, one question though, can it be used to launch windows apps?

Not yet, but it's on my (very long) whichlist. There are more items on that list than I can ever develop. I release a new module and/or widget about every 1,5 month.

The colors are a bit different with VNC. I will take a digital picture and post it here.

Started this thread but have only just managed to give it a go lol
DHS looks very polished and has a nice Rocketdock type of feel, very pretty.
I am having a few issues tho, joggler related i would imagine :-)
When i am on the main page and then want to go back to open the localhost browser to install widgets/modules i have to go in to the settings and select exit to windows which i think must close DHS as it wont work.
@Pete what xp build/ browser are you using as i think this could be my issue,i am using Dans nippy little Xp 2003 build with Browzar ..
Also as previously mentioned the first words are missing to the left of the page on the Dhs browser
Thanks

Don't start the browser on the Joggler, but do it from another PC. Just type http://<joggler-ip-address>:9000. The browser interface is not really suitable for small screens (was never meant to be). But DHS MUST be running, because it contains the web server !! So don't quit DHS !

Most of the changes require a restart of DHS, so once you're done changing the configuration close the browser and restart DHS by clicking the close icon (first icon from the right) and selecting "restart DHS".
