Finally got sopcast working on xubuntu!

Post by james »

if anyone wants to know i will post and help..

it used to not load up as was pointing to vlc 1.0.x not 1.1.x

changed the script but for some reason vlc would open and then crash

then i discovered vlc doesn't play many files properly anyhow, so i pointed it to a program called parole and it works!!!

ok! I had to reinstall xubuntu on my joggler and have reinstalled sopcast... it is not easy but definately worth it!

for those who don't know, sopcast gives peer to peer tv and i am led to believe this may or may not include free live sports channels!

ok... so on a fresh xubuntu build this is what i did

open terminal --- start-accessories-terminal

then three steps to type in. press enter/yes as appropriate as they come through

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ferramroberto/sopcast
sudo add-get update
sudo apt-get install sopcast-player

it will also install vlc but you have to use parole to get it to work

via terminal type in

sudo nano /usr/share/sopcast-player/lib/VLCWidget.py

THAT IS CASE SENSITIVE so capitals for VLCW

then scroll down using the arrow keys on the on screen virtual keyboard until you see the lines

import vlc_1_0_x
import vlc_1_1_x

DELETE the line import vlc_1_0_x

then save this file by pressing on virtual keyboard CTRL then X

it will ask if you want to save press Y for yes
then press enter to confirm

then load up sopcast - it will appear in multimedia

then go to EDIT-PREFERENCES

click on USE EXTERNAL MEDIA PLAYER and it should be poiting to mplayer....

delete everything there, and instead type 'parole' (no 's i.e.. just type the word parole)

then you can hopefully open up sopcast channels!

i'm told one of the best sources is wiziwig

open firefox and go to http://www.wiziwig.tv/index.php?part=sports
or google wiziwig sports

then click on the sport you like and a game you like then it will come up with a list of links

the flash links are slow... but you will see some sopcast links :)

using firefox hold down a click on 'PLAY NOW' on something you're interested in and select from the pop up menu 'copy link'

then go back to sopcast and go to FILE-OPEN and paste in the link from firefox!

wait for it to buffer... and hey presto!!!

hope this helps!!!
