**BUILD 3 - Windows XP Professional SP3 (Plus Tablet PC)**
Re: BUILD 2 - Windows XP Professional SP3 (Plus Tablet PC)
I've just finished reimaging a virtual machine with a ghost 11 boot disk. Mounting it now to write to USB stick. You might be delighted or just plain disturbed to find that the creator has got EWF.sys and ffire.sys listed in the early boot sequence. I'll have it up and running shortly and see if I can get it working this time. It's all in Chinese though, so I also have to investigate how to to add a language that I speak to the XP. That'll be English, then.

Re: BUILD 2 - Windows XP Professional SP3 (Plus Tablet PC)
Still having problems with that NIC? I've still not been able to replicate that on my, admittedly simpler powerline/hardcabled/wireless network. If you've not already done it, see if the network wizard cleans up the config. Before I did that, I could only VNC into the Jogglers by IP address, not by machine name. Since the wizard, now I can use the machine name.pete_c wrote:BTW Mevi; I get a maybe 50% boot rate with the NIC cable plugged in on the desk Joggler on your last build; timing from the video thing to the desktop with the NIC cable is maybe 5 seconds or so more. It works or just hangs there at 80 seconds from soup to nuts.

Ewf and ff, damn at least its well protected lol, internet tomorrow so will be able to help out a not more from then, getting a new image up and running tonight, ready for upload tomorrow, I tried monlogon last night and it makes windows boot real fast, but it also breaks file sharing at the same time when I fix that will be a fabulous addition!

Re: BUILD 2 - Windows XP Professional SP3 (Plus Tablet PC)
Mevi,
Only playing with one Joggler lately cuz its sitting on my desk. Its not really an issue about the network thing as its always on.
Just playing with the timing from power up this morning. Will give the network wizard a try.
The other three are just here and there; I am using them but not paying attention to much to them. 2 are connected via Gb, 1 via Mb and two have internally configured USB SSDs and one is using just a regularly mounted external USB stick.
Your finds are very interesting relating to the EWF build...
Dan, great news on your internet connection!

Re: BUILD 2 - Windows XP Professional SP3 (Plus Tablet PC)
Interesting...
Mevi your last build will boot up 100% of the time with the NIC cable plugged in when I move the USB SSD stick to a hub with a wireless keyboard mouse attached to it. Its slower to boot though. Confirmed this by doing a regular shut down and moving the same stick to the side port.
I wonder what would happen if I did the same thing with the internal USB port as its really a secondary USB port to the side USB port?

That's a link to the Chinese XP build with EWF. I have uploaded the VHD I imaged in a virtual machine so you won't have to get your hands dirty with a GHO. It boots, and is alive when I plug/unplug keyboard devices (I get the 'bing bong' sound when I do), except the keyboard/mouse have no effect. I cannot <enter> through the device prompts. I must have been tripping when I saw FFIRE.SYS in the boot up. I only saw EWF.SYS this time.
The main reason for trying these Chinese builds is to see if the headphones mute the speakers - I hoped they had fixed that, but on the two builds I have tried, they have not. Both speakers and headphones are 'live' at the same time.

I've read that it also removes the ability to log in with a choice of user account - You're logged in as SYSTEM, a default user without administrative rights.danfoshizzle wrote:Ewf and ff, damn at least its well protected lol, internet tomorrow so will be able to help out a not more from then, getting a new image up and running tonight, ready for upload tomorrow, I tried monlogon last night and it makes windows boot real fast, but it also breaks file sharing at the same time when I fix that will be a fabulous addition!
I'd need to play with it to see if it breaks more than file sharing for me. That alone might be a deal breaker, with the media server elements of my build. Might not be worth the 15-20 seconds it knocks off the boot time.

Re: BUILD 2 - Windows XP Professional SP3 (Plus Tablet PC)
I've done a side-by-side boot time comparison between my work in progress build 3 and the same build hacked to use minlogon and themes disabled. Both on HDD and then on USB stick.
For me, the times to useable desktop were just about the same ~1:25, only there was no feedback on-screen to say what the minlogon HDD was doing. It also took longer on my build to shutdown.

It's worth pointing out to anyone not familiar with XP on the Joggler, that the first 45 seconds are the Joggler EFI boot, the XOJ bootloader & replacement ntldr.

Re: BUILD 2 - Windows XP Professional SP3 (Plus Tablet PC)
Yeah it is a deal breaker unless there is a workaround, themes does not affect boot time for me, but does make a tiny performance hit, but its nothing noteworthy, will play around with the new sound drivers a bit later on, gotta wait for bt to run a cable from the telephone pole to my house, then sky need to activate my internet, apparently I have been given an upgraded router too, a new sagemcom model!

Great news guys.
Dan is it a DSL or Broadband type or Fiber type of connection to BT?
I'm playing with some live graphing here with the BBC audio streaming in the backround. This is bad (good?); but its almost like watching a movie (well for me).

Re: BUILD 2 - Windows XP Professional SP3 (Plus Tablet PC)
Its an adsl connection through a phoneline, least it would have been if the engineer didn't lie his arse off, was suppose to arrange for someone to come and connect my house to the system/telephone pole, then no one shows up, sky are adamant that its working and even tech support cannot answer lol, will be phoning them first thing in the morning, not even sure if the openreach engineers work on the weekends!!

Re: BUILD 2 - Windows XP Professional SP3 (Plus Tablet PC)
Similiar story here Dan around 10 years ago.
I took off work to wait for my BB installation which was to occur from 9 AM to 12Noon. Well I received a phone call at 4:30 PM stating that the BB installer was running late and to reschedule. I did not and requested that it still be installed; mostly because of my wasted day. It started to rain at about 5:30 PM. He didn't show until 6:30PM and I made him install it anyways and did get my BB up. What a huge debacle that was. I've seen similiar occurances with the neighbors installations.
Pushing for some diversity of BB here. We are too far from the CO for DSL or ADSL but we do have two flavors of fiber around. One direct the house and the other to a 5 house box with CAT5 cable going to the homes. If the competition existed in our little neighborhood of 100 homes it would be nice to have a choice of BB flavors.
In Florida started with DSL, then went to cable BB and currently have FIOS which is fiber. It was nice to have a choice there though. The box there is a combo wireless, switch, TV firewall and modem. I bridged the network to my own firewall AP switch combination such was my preference.
The competiton keeps the prices at an even base of sorts. These days its mostly a self installed package here.
The modem/router basically has a MAC address; yours to keep; does a TFTP to the mothership; then drops a configuration on your modem. Typically a DHCP address unless you pay for a static internet address. Very simple.

Direct to the house fiber is starting to catch on here, with british telecom introducing infinity, virgin media currently offer fiber optic bb but its only to the terminal, then goes copper to the household, seems pointless to me lol

Oh and interesting one for you mevi, seems people are using fbwf as a steadystate kinda deal, fbwf functions similar to ewf but allows for loopholes, so for example you could allow your my documents to be directly written rather than written in ram and deleted

Dan,
With fiber / copper hybrid to fiber you get truely Gb instead of Mb speeds for your internet connection versus ADSL.
A mainline to the pipe of sorts.
Still though the offerings are only approaching the 100Mb marks; but the groundwork is there...

Re: BUILD 2 - Windows XP Professional SP3 (Plus Tablet PC)
have been on the fiber offerings over here before, but its still a bit too juvenile at the moment in the uk, maybe in a couple more years when more companies offer it then it will be better, virgin media's broadband is excellent, but they have started limiting the service, which for me is a deal breaker as i am a heavy media streamer/downloader, where as the adsl company I have now is a truly unlimited plan, which in itself is a rarity over here lol (thats once my broadband is running lol)

Re: BUILD 2 - Windows XP Professional SP3 (Plus Tablet PC)
Its very sparse here too Dan.
The real push though is related to Internet TV more than anything else though. I saw a demo many years ago of MS Internet TV service; very impressive. Today the FIOS service does resemble it a bit with on demand multichannel digital HD media streaming from the Internet. Its mostly what its all about. The default here for BB now is a combo tuner/DVR box and mulitple streaming from the DVR to the rest of the TVs in the house via networked digital boxes instead of analogue BB boxes. It'll most likely be a la carte TV in the future though paying for buckets of tiers of service.
