SigmaTel speaker/headphone issues under XP

Post by Mevi »

I'm working on a new XP build, but I am still having headaches with regard to the audio drivers on XP. I'm hoping someone has some experience of how to fix it. I've already Google searched for answers with no success. Maybe one of the Linux enthusiasts can give me some pointers?

Both the headphone output and the speakers are active at all times - plugging in headphones does not mute the speakers.

The current drivers in use with the XP builds are modded as obviously there is no official Windows driver for our Joggler. I'm sure this is a driver/registry issue, as I've read of laptops made by LG, Dell & Apple which have this problem when running XP. Plus, while trying other drivers, I've had the headphones working without the speakers working at all. I can't use this method as a work-around as the speakers just output low level digital fizz.

SigmaTel have gone bust and as far as I can tell, there has been no further development done for the 92xx audio chip on the US15W chipset with XP since '08.

Thanks.

on linux the alsa audio code needs a specific driver patch for the headphone switching to work. That's all I can help with I'm afraid apart from the obvious suggestion of course, that you could use linux ;-) (sorry!).

We could just use linux but that would be too easy lol thinking that config file of the alsa driver may heed the info we need?

Could be, Dan. I spent all of yesterday daytime and evening going through inf files, tweak a setting, reboot, tweak a registry setting, reboot, swear a lot, reboot, give up.

Buzz, I'm a complete novice when it comes to Linux, otherwise I would have just stuck with one of your Ubuntu builds, which seem to do everything we're trying to do with XP, and are doing it better! I'll have a look through that. Thanks Buzz.

JolisOS is pretty easy to use imho. That's what I use on my devices. I like that if I install say spotify downstairs, the other joggler with jolios will sync.

Yeah, I tried your JoliOS build. I liked the feature set, and yes, I liked that everything followed my login from machine to machine. I don't have any issue at all with Linux and for an appliance it suits me just fine. I'm a tinkerer by nature and that is where I feel out of my depth with Linux, as I don't have the same 20 or so years of experience that I do with DOS & Windows. :)

That was one of the places I've been looking on. Error 10 (device not starting) after trying the last xp version listed here. Looks like we will have a driver once we get vista or w7 working. ;P

speaking of vista, has anybody been able to get the vista bootmanager to load like i have seen previously? if we load the bootloader maybe we can just build an image like we do for xp?

I still have the boot files from the vista beta and I've just found the Arcronis 2011 boot cd has an EFI which it claims is bootable on Mac & PC. I'll write the Arcronis ISO to a stick and see what happens. The link to the vista beta ISO is dead now. Crap. Win 7 is possible, with some work. I'm kinda thinking that XPe is reinventing the wheel... Tiny XP already does all that we need. W7 I already have booting from USB on my lappy with no problems aside from a lack of speed. It's 32bit, so the only hurdle is either fooling the bootloader that there is a BIOS, or hacking together a 32bit EFI bootloader. I don't know which is easier at this point. The SLIC bootloaders emulate some of the BIOS, I think using GRUB legacy, so that may be a way to go about it. Chain load GRUB EFI to the SLIC bootloader.

I can see the section of code that deals with the HP muting, but it bears no relation to any configuration in neither the ini/inf files, nor the XP registry. I'll badger some of the folks over at http://forums.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/ ... l-support/ as jpearn suggested. 8-)

Dan
here are the files for windows boot manager,
to see the boot manager you need to have refit installed on the joggler efi partition as in my multiboot, then extract the files on to a stick and plugin and switch on.
by the way the photo I posted was of my joggler.

No that wasn't me,I just acquired the files and gave it a go, but there was no winload files so I installed vista beta2 just to get them.
Haven't tried anything with them yet, (No time)
