USB storage benchmarks

Post by danfoshizzle »

A thread for bencmarking your usb storage option, be it usb hard drive, flash stick, memory card and reader or whatever.

Hoping we can find the best storage solution available to the joggler!!

Benchmarks with crystalmark would be great :http://crystalmark.info/software/Crysta ... dex-e.html

But if you use linux or mac anything that will tell us the read/write speed would be awesome.

Thanks

that would be great, gonna collect some info later on about different sticks, theres lots of info on the net but trawling for it can be a pain, so to have it all on this forum would be a touch.

Here are some benchmarks moved over from the W2003 posts using very old software from simplesoft. Will post updated benchmarks using Crystal Mark.
Actually noticed my first benchmarks with the Joggler were done with Crystal Disk Mark.
It can be found here (portable)

http://sourceforge.jp/projects/crystald ... _0_1b.zip/

I couldn't delete the old post; so just marked it deleted with a reference to her.

Using Crystal Disk Mark with the settings at 5 / 100Mb see (quick - will do more later)

The application/not the speed test seems to run the fastest with the USB SSD stick. The number are what was expected. I have a pagefile of 1024 on this XP Joggler.
Will add HP164 4Gb microUSB stick, Patriot Memory 4Gb USB stick, ZIF 30Gb Hitachi, 1/2sized 2.5 Toshiba 30Gb to this list, 16Gb MicroSD, Generic 4Gb CFtoUSB drive to this list.

pete - those last results are from the actual joggler, or from a pc?

Some benchmarks from linux (on a desktop pc not on the joggler) - ill plug them into another machine to get a benchmark on the crystal mark tool in a bit

Verbatim Store n Go. standard stick sort of thing, bought from a local shop for joggler dev stuff. Note when DD'ing an image to this stick, it usually goes at around 8-9mb/second, which is faster than this benchmark shows
storengo.png
Super Talent Pico C - bought specially for use with my joggler. nice read speed. when dd'ing an image to it, it usually does about 8-9mb/second also, but perhaps a bit better than the stick above.

From the Joggler running XP remotely with VNC.

Big difference between Linux and XP; interesting.

I did a quick test on a windows machine on crystal mark. my super talent pico c, did really badly on random access, and the verbatim store n go, did pretty decently. strange, but then perhaps it has been "optimised" to just do really well on sequential access.

Last night tested the little micro HP 4Gb memory stick in first gen Joggler XP. The numbers I got were so bad that I will not put them up. I did notice a "crawling of sorts" and this build kept showing a 199Mhz CPU; so that probably had something to do with it. Will put a more modern build on the micro HP stick. I like that it has a very small footprint. Interested that it doesn't have a flashing LED; but rather a "glowing" HP logo on it.

Yes; but that you brought us XP or Wintel to the Joggler for the masses is just in itself a great "first" Dan!
