XBMC runs out of the box on linux 11.04 over at joggler.exotica.org.uk/ubuntu/ and can be found in Accessories>Sound and Video>XBMC,
with regards to running from USB itself, are you talking as a standalone install? This is not yet possible but there is a new XBMC revision called XBMC Live which shows promise and runs, i imagine, just as a frontend on an ubuntu revision. Should you wish this though, you could simply install 11.04 and set the session in login management to "XBMC" or add XBMX as a startup application.

Kind Regards,
Danny

Yeah I meant as a standalone, just trying to keep the interface as basic as possible without using a mouse so the Mrs can use it as easy as squeezeplayer on the original joggler OS,
I installed Joli OS and used it via that but playback was very choppy after a little while, even after applying the hack to let joggler run hotter,
I've got another memory stick on the way and I'm going to have another go with Joli OS using that

you could just make xbmc load on startup however easily enough if that's all you want to use as has been mentioned.
if playback is choppy, I would think it is most likely it is still throttling and you have made a mistake with the throttle temp config.

If throttling has been changed and its still choppy it could be your usb stick, the read speed needs to be relatively decent, i tested the ubuntu image on 3 usb sticks and 1 was absolutely abysmal in reading and increased start up times, lag and choppiness in everything i was doing.

What I did was leave a space after splash then entered
thermal.psv=80
saved and rebooted , was that right ?

well it should be fine. could be as anonyx said. to make sure you could stick the usb stick in a windows machine and stick the contents of grub.cfg file on pastebin. also you could benchmark your usb stick on windows to see how quick it is

Ok so now I'm trying Ubuntu 11.04 (Natty) btrfs , changed the throttling temp to 80 , and whereas with Joli OS the volume was really loud this is the opposite really low , so not sure if the sound is still choppy or not , memory stick turned out to be fine

Scratch that , sound was turned down on desktop lol
