PS3 Media Server

Post by marctwo »

I want to use one of my Jogglers to stream to my PS3. I currently use Twonky on my Qnap NAS but I think PS3MS would be better. Has anyone done this? I was planning to run Ubuntu and have PS3MS installed on that and then just point it at the SMB shared folder on the NAS. Do you think the Joggler would be up to this task?

I use Serviio (another DLNA server) to stream content to an Xbox 360 but not on my Joggler and not from a network share. It should work with the PS3.

I'm going to give it a try this evening on the Joggler and I'll post back the results.

----EDIT----
I've also read that Mediatomb is quite good - http://mediatomb.cc/ - but I've never used it. The site also says it's been part of Ubuntu since “hardy” so should be easy to install.

Thanks for your reply. PS3MS works for the XBox as well so you could always try that.

I had this idea, but it was far too complicated to install PSMS on ubuntu so I left it. I'm gonna wait and see what the Windows XP project cooks up, once they get ethernet working i'll just use that and PSMS!

p.s my idea was to store the files on the joggler.. streaming from a nas, to a joggler, and then to a ps3 seems like a waste of time!

I had a play with PMS on my Joggler while I was working out what I wanted from my media server. PMS installs on the Joggler no problem at all, I think it took about 20 mins including the download on our pants broadband.

Is not the most upto date package, but follow the topic and you won't go far wrong. Upgrading to the latest version is just a matter of coping over the files if you feel the need.

Thanks for your reply. Did it work well? Were you able to stream any mkv's?

Hi Marctwo

It played Big Buck Bunny through a cable link just, forget it if your files need transcoding. I didn't really push it if I'm honest, the joggler really doesn't have the horse power for trouble free video streaming.
I was using my joggler as a test bed for various experiments before I modified my Mediaserver. If you want mediaserver I would recommend something more powerful, something much more powerful.
Good to have a play though.

MiniDLNA works pretty nicely with my PS3. Install to your joggler. Mount your NAS as a share on the joggler, and set MiniDLNA to look for this. This was on the stock OS using the Kernel extension for CIFS (which I believe is now part of PnP).

I got PS3MS up and running under Ubuntu on the Joggler. However, I have a problem mapping the media folder on my NAS.

I managed to mount the SMB shared folder which shows up in Ubuntu but I can't seem to select this in PS3MS (it only allows you to select local folders). Is there a way of fooling PS3MS into thinking that the network share is a local folder? Can I use a symbolic link or something like that? Sorry, my Linux knowledge is very poor.

Hello Marctwo

Have you used absolute paths?

i.e. folders = \/media\/sharing-server\/share_1,\/media\/sharing-server\/share_2

Thanks for your reply. I eventually got it working using:

/home/joggler/.gvfs/<foldername> on <servername>

I still have some other issues though so when I've fixed them I'll report back as to how well it works.
