I was able to get the speed up on the internal flash memory stick.

Today though got the USB SSD stick. It is recognized as a drive instead of flash memory. Its about twice the size of a regular flash memory stick but it'll fit inside of the Joggler.

If this performs as good or similiar to the microdrive; then will be using it for the MS builds on the Joggler.

Dan,

Its really great that you are doing this for us!

You have to check out the SSD USB sticks being sold on Ebay. dub dub dub kingspec dot com.

$24 for 8 Gb.

The USB SSD would not fit inside of the Joggler by about 1-2 mm on one side. So I busted it out of the little case. Fits perfect. Faster than the microdrive booting now. Very impressed. Whats nice is that you can get a 16 or 32 Gb SSD for a bit more and do a multiOS boot from it modifying the EFI a bit....

Here are some pictures.

Dan,

Great news on the image.

The Joggler is easy to open. Remove the label at the bottom of the Joggler in the back. There are four screws there. Remove the 4 screws. Use a plastic card/credit card and fit it between the bottom loose piece of the cover on the right and on the left; work the plastic card slowly towards the top of the Joggler; one side then then other. After both sides are separated then work the plastic card across the top. There is tape holding the cluster of wires to the PC board. Be careful with it a bit. Here's a you tube video.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KjMLUIoYQm4

Will post some benchmarks on the new USB SSD today. I ordered 4 more USB SSD's this morning.

I have noticed an odd thing with maybe a once every 10 cold reboot. I think I mentioned it once early on. It'll sometimes boot to the 199Mhz speed for whatver reason (maybe its the Joggler I am testing with). First I thought it was just what the System was showing; but it appears to actually be running at the 199Mhz speed.

The booting to a desktop time with the USB SSD is around a bit more than 60 seconds from plugging in the Joggler (before the O2 logo to the point of connectivity to the network; desktop icons all on).

uploading overnight,

will be on ff by morning and will post links on first and last comment

internal speakers now working!
But cannot get petes method of of installing the ethernet drivers ot work, although if we are lucky maybe pete will fix this and reupload.

One thing you must do when first booting is switch it on, then leave it to settle for 10 minutes as this will let all the system settle back into place, as although we all have the same hardware on the joggler the different usb sticks as me and pete have found out have different outcomes

PS second thing to do is try out xbmc with the new skin i found, its really a good fit for the joggler and the audio player on xbmc is the one that i currently use as it has a nice interface and can do nice visualisations lol

Also xbmc is playing video really smooth, both streaming and from the drive. No screen tearing or artifacts in my tests.

Speak to you all tomorrow !!

Great news Dan!

What was the issue with the speaker?

Relating to the NIC card; the original included drivers didn't work. This following linked drivers worked with the WLAN installed card or not installed.

http://download.ecsusa.com/dlfileecs/dr ... _WinXP.zip

1 - removed old NIC driver - unplug and leave the cat5 cable off until the last step
2 - reboot
3 - don't autoinstall a NIC driver
4 - unzip the file; run the setup
5 - if the drivers shows an error after installed; disable it.
6 - configure the LAN speed to 100 Mbs full duplex
7 - leave it disabled; reboot
8 - enable NIC - it should be OK if not reboot again
9 - plug the cat5 cable; it should get a DHCP address.

The MAC address will be some odd alpha numeric or just alfa characters like:

AFAFAFAFAFAF

You can change it to anything else.

I read that the Realtek PCIe GBE NIC has a problem falling asleep and not waking up.

The attached picture is one of the hardware configuration. Got to NIC status; properties, configure and the Advanced Tab and the following:
1 - 802.1Q/1p VLAN Tagging - Disabled
2 - Auto Disable PCIe - Disabled
3 - Auto Disable PHY - Disabled
4 - Checksum Offload - Disabled
5 - Flow Control - Disabled
6 - Green Ethernet - Disabled
7 - Jumbo Frame - Disabled
8 - Large Send Offload - Disabled
9 - Network Address - up to you.
10 - Shutdown Wake-On-Lan - Disabled
11 - Speed & Duplex - 100 Mbps Full Duplex
12 - Wake-On-Lan Capabilities - Disabled
13 - WOL & Shutdown Link Speed - 10 Mbps First

Now I don't know if this is "correct"; it just works for me.

Yeah give it a try Pete, IMO this build runs alot faster than the previous builds as it knows how to handle the ram access.

Dan,
I initially install it to a USB memory stick to see the speed before putting it on something else.

Thanks for all the hard work on this. Am really looking forward to trying it out.

Hit a snag though - I downloaded the rar file, extracted it and then tried to write it to a USB flash drive using Win32diskimager. Never had a problem doing that with mint, ubuntu or android, but this time when I click to write the file nothing happens. I've tried several USB flash drives - that I've used previously for the joggler - same thing happened each time. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Dan,
FyodorNinian - I had no issues writing the image to an 8Gb USB stick using USB Image tool.

Downloaded and installed on slowest 8Gb USB stick I have. A Kingston DataTraveler.

1 - Booted quickly from external USB port by itself. Went to desktop just fine. No touch screen response though. Similiar to first XP version "tested" Looks to be running some sort of keyboard script; but its not working or I am not waiting long enough. Seeing an initial Service Control manager error about one driver not loading.
2 - Next test was same stick on internal USB port - quit booting in first phase. (not finding boot NTFS).
3 - plugged "slow" 8Gb memory stick to USB hub with wireless Lenova keyboard. Slower booting than the direct connect. Quit at "crcdisk.sys" part of booting.
4 - plugged USB memory stick to side USB port and Lenova USB wireless keyboard to inside USB port. Stopped at crcdisk.sys. Restarted via cold boot.
Same result; stopping at crcdisk.sys
5 - went back to external port - smaller 4 port USB hub with memory stick and Lenova wireless keyboard. Booted to O2 screen.
6 - back to USB stick plugged into side USB port. Something changed. Stalled again at crcdisk.sys.
7 - Re-imaged 8 Gb stick with same image. Takes about 3 minutes or so.
8 - Plugged the USB stick and Lenova wireless keyboard into a 7 port USB hub that I've been using with XP image.
This time didn't stop at crcdisk.sys; usb stick led blinking (my way to see that its loading something). Went to desktop screen. It loaded the keyboard driver and saw my Lenova wireless keyboard. Loaded up some more drivers and rebooted. Stuck at O2 logo on reboot. Unplugged it (cold boot).
Booting regular upon cold boot. Touchscreen not working (seen this with XP version) - went to CP/Device Manager / USB Composite device in error; did an update and touch screen is now working. 3 PCI/1 unknown devices though are showing to be in error.
Noticed that internal NIC is seen right away. Tested sound; works well; volume control is good. Attached is a VNC pic.

Looks nice Dan! Quick and very responsive desktop.

Put the image on an IDE to USB connected 1/2 size 2.5" drive. Ran first time connected to USB 7 port hub / with keyboard.

A bit faster; not by much though.
