Boxee for ubuntu

Post by james »

Hi there. Has anyone got boxee to work on ubuntu on joggler?

I can only get it to work on my eeepc

It is VERY touch friendly and better than xbmc in my opinion as has links to most tv shows online e.g. bbc iplayer, seesaw... in the us you get netflix!

and you can also install navidata to access other sources e.g. icefilms, grooveshark

i tried with the old ubuntu 10 builds and it crashed when I tried to run. I can't remember the error... maybe the new ubuntu 11 builds will work...

thanks again for all the help!

James

The only thing Boxee does for me is lead to a blank screen. When killed from the command line, the Boxee flickers up onto the screen for a second or two (with some horizontal banded lines) and then we drop back to the desktop.

So far as I know, Boxee is actually based on XBMC. BuZz is the XBMC specialist around here (amongst many other things!); I think his advice would be the best to seek.

I don't know much about boxee really, apart from that it is based on xbmc codebase originally. If it doesn't work, then I can't really help too much. xbmc has bbc iplayer though, and I think boxee uses or embeds a browser to playback that stuff, or at least it used to, so performance should be better on xbmc. isn't seesaw pretty much dead now also, with most companies pulling out ? certainly doesnt seem to have any content via the website.

xbmc has icefilms plugin btw, as well as hulu. you can use the xeebo skin which works pretty well here.

I think the Hulu plugin is broken, even for US users (at least it was the last time I checked the XBMC forum). I can't test Hulu in the UK because I don't have a VPN setup and it rejects non-US IP addresses. I'm not sure if the Netflix plugin works for US subscribers but it's worth checking.
