Debian Buster for OpenFrame (Kernel 3.16)
TEMPORARILY HORRIBLY BROKEN!
These images are down while I repair the build system and create some overlays which actually work.
Please use the Ubuntu Bionic images instead, which are much more up to date and functional.
Follow the instructions on this page for installing to external media,
or use the Reflashing Tool to install to internal memory.

Take a look at my post about Ubuntu Bionic if you're not sure how to use this.
Given that Ubuntu are no longer supporting 32-bit processors after Ubuntu Bionic 18.04 LTS, I thought a little work on the build system was in order to have it support straight Debian. If you're not aware, Ubuntu is based on Debian, so it shouldn't be too awful keeping both ticking over.
If you do spot any issues, please post here.

Re: Debian Buster for OpenFrame
For some reason Buster is 21 MB bigger than Bionic despite having fewer packages installed.

Re: Debian Buster for OpenFrame
And for Bionic:
I'll be honest, I've barely looked at either of these, but if anyone spots anything they think is daft, please post.
The idea behind the included packages is that the device should be able to do at least something useful out of the box; my baseline was "can it play some music from the internet", which it achieves with mpg123.

I have commented out the two lines as shown in your post and it still gives the same error message.
Tried both with the previous image (adding the cmdl instruction) and burning the replacement image.

Re: Debian Buster for OpenFrame
After a day of struggle with the Bionic 3.16 and 5.4 kernels I though I would look again at this.
First it seems the wi-fi thing is .yaml or whatever it is called.
I thought debian 10 (when I have installed it on an old 32 bit shuttle use wpa_supplicant. I know these aren't the correct technical terms, but I hope you get my drift.
Anyway, I connected a passive usb hub, keyboard and mouse and tried my luck.
I had no luck at all with the standard joggler, it would not complete the boot.
Tried the same set up with my Cisco joggler and after repeated attempts, each one making a little more progress, I arrived at a log in screen.
Only it wouldn't.
I had lots of messages on the screen, the most popular was

Re: Debian Buster for OpenFrame
Stay well away from the 5.4 kernels - even I don't use those. I was asked by someone who had a specific purpose for the 5.4 kernel to generate that one and I've just left it there, it really is only for development purposes. In fact, I'll remove the link from the post.Man in a van wrote: ↑Thu Apr 02, 2020 6:19 pm After a day of struggle with the Bionic 3.16 and 5.4 kernels I though I would look again at this.
Yup, there's a network.yaml file on the boot partition now, so it can be edited from your PC and have networking up and running without messing on the OpenFrame itself.Man in a van wrote: ↑Thu Apr 02, 2020 6:19 pm First it seems the wi-fi thing is .yaml or whatever it is called.
It does, but that's just the 'back end' that deals with wifi. Your interaction with it would be via that network.yaml configuration file, which controls netplan. Honestly, I'd stick with the Bionic 3.16.82op image right now - that's had the most testing. There are also certainly issues with the Buster image I don't know about yet.Man in a van wrote: ↑Thu Apr 02, 2020 6:19 pm I thought debian 10 (when I have installed it on an old 32 bit shuttle use wpa_supplicant. That sounds like an issue with your USB setup - the Joggler is remarkably tricksy in that regard. Try it again with no keyboard or mouse - just the stick in the side. Does it then boot? If not, try another stick. If still not, download a new copy of the image file and try again. I use those exact 3.16 images on a bunch o' OpenFrames, so I know they'll at least boot.Man in a van wrote: ↑Thu Apr 02, 2020 6:19 pm Anyway, I connected a passive usb hub, keyboard and mouse and tried my luck.

If it's being that flaky it must be a USB issue - either the combination of hub and USB stick, or just the stick - try with nothing but the stick attached. I know you won't be able to control it without peripherals (unless you SSH in) but it'll prove where the sticking point is.Man in a van wrote: ↑Thu Apr 02, 2020 6:19 pm

Thank you, sir! She is way past the rusks now and causing trouble around the house these days. She's big into chicken pies.Man in a van wrote: ↑Thu Apr 02, 2020 6:19 pm

We've also got the BBC Model B back up and running, which was my Dad's and I spent a lot of time in front of as a kid, so we were enjoying Dare Devil Denis this afternoon!

Re: Debian Buster for OpenFrame
What's the state of hardware support on Buster? is the GMA500 fully supported for hardware acceleration? Toying with building a minimal desktop environment to launch VLC and transcode on the fly a hdmi video source (already have a hdmi over ip device that directs a transport stream to an IP address) into h264 if the chipset will sufficiently offload this away from the CPU?
Re: Debian Buster for OpenFrame
It's the open source GMA500 driver only, not the Intel EMGD driver. So you get OpenGL, but not hardware accelerated video decoding.
I don't know about hardware accelerated video encoding at all, but if you're using an OpenFrame 2 you might be able to replace the internal mini-PCI wifi card with an encoder. I have no idea what hardware is available, if any, though.jimeney wrote: ↑Sun Apr 05, 2020 8:43 pm Toying with building a minimal desktop environment to launch VLC and transcode on the fly a hdmi video source (already have a hdmi over ip device that directs a transport stream to an IP address) into h264 if the chipset will sufficiently offload this away from the CPU?

Re: Debian Buster for OpenFrame
I tested the Openframe 2 KODI with a Crystal HD miniPCIE card and it worked fine years ago.
BUT that was Ubuntu 14.X and I am not sure whether drivers are around today for the Crystal HD cards. That said you can probably purchase one for $10.

Re: Debian Buster for OpenFrame
The last version of the kernel with the Crystal HD driver is 3.16, which is exactly the version which works perfectly with the OpenFrames.
I have it configured as a module, so you should just be able to drop one into the socket and boot the image.

Re: Debian Buster for OpenFrame
Yeah here tested it on an Openframe that was totally extracted from the case and another partially disassembled OpenFrame 2.
Thinking I posted a pictorial here someplace relating to this endeavor.
That said opening the case is easy peasey if you go baby steps. (the following is from memory as I have not done this in a very long time).
1 - Power off and disconnect the power supply
2 - use a long skinny screwdriver in the two holes on the bottom of the Openframe 2 case - be gental. I believe that Openpeak had a special tool with two long protrusions on it to remove the LCD screen from the front and used a plastic wedge to lift on the LCD screen.
3 - feel for two plastic tabs which hold the screen in place
4 - using a plastic tool or wedge or credit card pry up on the LCD screen at the bottom of it one side at a time while putting pressure on the left or right tab
5 - the screen lifts off and there is a ribbon cable going to the motherboard.
6 - I do not remember now if it was plastic or the metal heat shield to take off next to see the motherboard and the mini-pcie combo WLAN / Bluetooth card.
7 - the combo device had built in antennas so removing this device is easy. I purchased an extender to install the Crystal HD card.
What worked nicely was 1080 movies and live streaming television (mostly all 1080 here locally). You can purchase a combo USB stick today with Bluetooth / WlAN on it. I just installed one recently to one of my carpcs in Linux. You have to install the drivers manually but it is no big thing.

Re: Debian Buster for OpenFrame
Will try making a tool here using a coat hanger as pushing on the two tabs to remove the LCD screen will be easier than pushing on one tab with a screwdriver.
OK tried to pull up on the touchscreen using a plastic wedge tool and it does move. I have seen a picture of the disassemble tool which goes inside of the Openframe 2 and either pulls or pushes the plastic tabs keeping the touchscreen in place.
