Squeezebox software on a joggler?

Post by fowler909 »

Hi there, I have a joggler which I hacked ages ago and has ubuntu on it.
I now have a NAS with all of my songs on it and I have just bought a Logitec squeezebox duet to access this music through my stereo.
Problem is, I can only access this music once my pc is turned on, as it has to access the squeezebox software which acts as a server for the music. I don't want to have the pc on all the time, but I want to be able to access the music all the time. I figured that perhaps I could leave my joggler on all the time and it would act as the server??
Below is the link to the software that I would need to put on the joggler. Does anyone know a) if this has been done before? b) is the joggler capable of doing this and c) how hard is it for me to do?
I am ok with computers but by no means an IT wizard (i.e. I can follow instructions to hack the joggler but not sure about installing linux programs etc).

I notice that there is an ubuntu version there - will this work and how easy will it be to get going?

Thanks very much for your help...

I installed Squeezebox Server from Plug'n'Pimp on the stock OS and also from the Squeezebox site on Ubuntu (the site recognised the linux OS and automatically offered a 'deb' file for installation). Installation was a cinch on both.

My kitchen Joggler is a Squeezebox player and server and also syncs with a Joggler in the lounge hooked to my hi-fi. Everything runs with the PC turned off. Having said that, I'm using web music services mainly, such as Spotify, and haven't tried serving music from a NAS.

You should do some rooting around on the forums - use the search facility, it's pretty good. There's been lots of Squeezeplay stuff written already.

I have a similar setup to what yr after, I found ubuntu 11 to be the best platform for it, and it works really well :) To get it working with yr NAS you'll probably need to install SMBFS, assuming the NAS shares as a samba drive. Let us know if you run into any difficulties, tho I'm certainly no Linux techie either!

I have very nearly he same want - run Squeezebox Server on the Joggler (Ubuntu on USB thumb drive) getting it's music from a share on a NAS.

Currently it's running SqueezePlay on the Native O/S while I get my head round Samba and an old laptop acts as the SqueezeBox server from its local HDD.

SqueezePlay makes a great controller for the Duet and a nice little picture frame (Picture Gallery for SqueezePlay) when it is idle.
If I make any progress I'll post here, as long as you prommise to do the same ;-)

While I remember, you can actually install Squeezebox Server for Ubuntu directly from Logitech, rather than having to use PnP.

The details are here: http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/DebianPackage

You add their repository to your /etc/apt/sources.list and then install using apt-get. You can then use apt-get to keep the whole thing up-to-date too.

Well I think I've done it!

As roobarb! says you can do the install of the server direct to the Ubuntu on the Joggler (sorry I should have posted that sooner that's how I did my temp laptop server) - you do need to get handy with the touch screen keyboard, it's in the title bar.

My issue was being able to mount the share - but I finally cracked it - in a very insecure way but I've created a share on my NAS specifically for the purpose so I'm not that bothered!

#fowler909 - shout up for help if you want any pointers.

If you are going to have the joggler somewhere visible I thoroughly recommend you install SqueezePlay from here; http://birdslikewires.co.uk/articles/sq ... or-joggler you may already have it from the Ubuntu install but roobarb!'s recent builds are excellent.

Hm, it's dead this morning - I had to resort to pulling the power plug to get it re-booted.
Squeeze Box server is not happy any more, according to the logs it died yesterday afternoon and it re-started in 'safe-mode'.

I'll see what I can work out.

I've never had a problem with the P'n'P version of Squeezebox Server for the stock OS, or the one downloaded from squeezebox.com for Ubuntu on a stick.

There haven't been any upgrades to apps on P'n'P for a while, so I don't know if gforums is planning to distribute the latest version of the server through P'n'P.
