How does Ubuntu use the ethernet port?

Been trying to get xp to use the ethernet but unsuccessful, any help much appreciated
Fullscreen squeezeplay windows, server 2003, foshiz mini v1 and v2, (and a few broken builds) :P so far.....

The ethernet is supported by linux. It just doesn't have a mac address, and needs one before it will work. I have an upstart script that runs early on that on first boot generates a random mac address, and saves it later in the boot process. next time the saved address is used, and assigned. the driver is loaded first, then a mac address is assigned basically.

I wonder if the firmware of the Ethernet device could be modified such that we could change the MAC there?
