Ubuntu 11.10 / Oneiric Ocelot and further development
Ubuntu 11.10 / Oneiric Ocelot and further development
Been considering what do do about the next ubuntu release. Unity / Unity 2D is just not usable on the joggler from my experience, and so I'm thinking to switch to perhaps xfce for the next ubuntu release. I also though I should take a look at the new touchscreen interface on kde (as an additional thing).
Thoughts ?

I was having a squizz at Bodhi linux earlier... it uses Enlightenment, and has a snazzy osk called 'illume-keyboard'... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V39Jsxvd6dM
Perhaps E17 is worth a look?

Re: Ubuntu 11.10 / Oneiric Ocelot
Oh my giddy aunt! I haven't used xfce for about a decade. I used it on a linux box when running processor intensive and multiple apps. My computer was so crap that any spare RAM for apps was welcome; things would slow to a crawl if I used Enlightenment or KDE when running The Gimp for example.
I'm sure it's much more sophisticated now than the version of old, but if it is still lightweight in operation it would be great. I mainly use apps that take over the screen, such as Squeezeplay and XBMC, so a memory-hogging window manager running in the background is an unnecessary burden.

Re: Ubuntu 11.10 / Oneiric Ocelot
I've been having a play with Oneiric and thought that there were some changes in Unity 2D that really leant themselves to a touch display. However, there are certainly some aspects of it that are troublesome; massively oversized, non-scaling icons anyone? Why they couldn't have made that launcher fit to the screen size properly (like the applications list in the same tile does) I have no idea.
Xfce 4.8 looks tidy enough - think it might work very well. I'd still like to give the new Unity 2D a test drive though. Might get a Joggler upgraded to it if I get the opportunity.

having a play now. since it is ubuntu lucid based, my joggler stuff should just work out of the box. Would you be happy to test out an image for the Joggler if I put one together ?snze wrote:I was having a squizz at Bodhi linux earlier... it uses Enlightenment, and has a snazzy osk called 'illume-keyboard'... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V39Jsxvd6dM

Note to self - stop using /dev/sdX device names, and use disk-ids etc. This will stop you from being tired, booting your pc, and dd'ing a joggler image to /dev/sdb which in this case was the main drive rather than the USB stick (which decided to be /dev/sda! as it was plugged in pre boot).
ctrl+c after 1.5gb written, but suffice to say, the root fs wasn't all that happy.
I've really had lots of fun restoring all files from backup / reinstalling (NOT - luckily I'm mr.backup and all machines here do daily backups to the nas).
I was just about to test a bodhi image too!

Hell's teeth. I've done that too, though luckily on a VM (my backup wasn't exactly recent, though).
Count me in for beta testing. You know I like that kind of thing.

well, i realised I had not backed it up (I backed up the filesystem, but forgot to do it so all ownership was preserved) so I need to rebuild it, then i went to the pub instead, and today I have been in the garden with cider. hic.

Re: Ubuntu 11.10 / Oneiric Ocelot
same kernel as the other builds. when the next emgd driver comes out, ill look at seeing if that and the wireless would build against a 3.x kernel etc and how alsa behaves (and with downgrading it as I do currently).
Re: Ubuntu 11.10 / Oneiric Ocelot
I have a (beta) oneiric image if anyone is interested. (standard ubuntu with unity 2d). it doesn't have the florence keyboard though, but the onboard keyboard look has been improved a bit since natty at least.
On my desktop I have now switched to xfce, and ill do an image with that too, or perhaps lxde
