Here's a barmy idea... could I open it up again and put the reflashing stick in the internal USB port, either directly or through a hub? I guess that would tell me if the external USB socket is damaged?
I think maybe?
You can also check for a 5VDC on the external USB ports and internal USB ports.
It doesn't hurt to try / check.

Re: Dead Joggler, white flashing screen
Ahem... I have a slightly embarrassing confession to make...
Dismantling the Joggler once more, this time on the kitchen worktop where the light is very bright, I noticed something I hadn't spotted before... a bit of the case at the back of this Joggler is deformed - it's obviously been very hot at some point. Hopefully you can see the attached pics:

Inside the Joggler, the nearest component to the deformed bit of case is this large chip that I've drawn a yellow box around (it's next to the EFI chip):

I never noticed it before, but I'm 99.9% sure I didn't do it in the last 24 hours, as there's been no smoke or smells whilst I've been tinkering. Maybe this mini-meltdown is what spontaneously killed my Joggler in the first place? Maybe I was lucky the house didn't burn down. Do you gents know what that component is?
(The first time I dismantled this Joggler, I could tell someone had been in there before me - I guess it's had some tinkering before I got it.)

Re: Dead Joggler, white flashing screen
So looks like it's to do with the Ethernet connection..? Whatever it is, it's obviously been pretty warm at some point...
Anyway, I've now remembered why I gave up on this Joggler a couple of years ago - all my efforts have failed and I think I've tried all the usuals: different USB sticks; blind-keyboard-bashing; running from an exernal USB OS. Not to worry, I'll put it back in the cupboard as a potential organ donor for the other Jogglers (I have three working ones in the house right now). Thanks for the advice though!
Totally off-topic, I found something else interesting this week... I flashed my 'new' Joggler with Roobarb's internal SqueezeplayOS to set up in the dining room. I built a USB stick on my PC with Roobarb's reflashing tool in the usual way, and the reflash went fine.
The tinkering bug then bit me, and it occurred to me that this was a newer version of SqueezeplayOS than I was running on the living room Joggler that was flashed a couple of years ago. Why not update it with the latest version whilst I've got a USB flashing stick to hand? Interestingly, the living room Joggler wouldn't flash from the stick that I'd just successfully used - it just wasn't interested. Back to the PC, reformat the stick, rebuild the flash image, and it worked good as gold. Intriguing, no?
They're a law unto themselves, I swear...

Re: Dead Joggler, white flashing screen
Yes; here many years ago quit playing mostly with the regular USB stick for this stuff and purchased a few of the Kingspec SSD 8Gb USB sticks.
They worked much better than a regular USB stick at the time. Only one of these have failed me to date (last few years). They were too big to fit inside of the Joggler so I did remove the cases from all of them and still use them today.
They do today still work better than a regular USB stick (2.0 or 3.0).
That said too I eventually did move all of the USB booting Jogglers to ZIF/PATA port booting Jogglers for regular use 24/7 and use the SSD USB booting stuff for experimenting today. For just Squeezebox player use the SSD USB stick is still ideal and way better than any USB 2.0 / 3.0 stick. That is my opinion though based on my testing of this stuff over the years. I have not had one Joggler or Openpeak device fail me yet and did purchase a couple over the years that were dead upon arrival that I fixed and they are still working today. They were easy fixes relating to the power supply circuits that had gone out.

Re: Dead Joggler, white flashing screen
The component you've highlighted h5007nl looks like it has a collection of transformers inside and it appears that it can get hot, from the datasheet.
eu.mouser.com/ProductDetail/Pulse/H5007 ... sXDg%3D%3D
productfinder.pulseeng.com/products/dat ... /HC500.pdf
But if a component gets hot enough to damage the case I would have expected to see some effect on the component and maybe in the surrounding area - say the PCB is a slightly different colour. Also, if you smell it really close you can pick up a certain scent.
From the pic you have shown, I don't see any sort of damage. I guess you could get some IC testing equipment and test that chip out. I've not seen anything like this before.
I think the chip has something to do with the network. Just wondering if you've used power over ethernet ?
