I have checked the USB stick and the files are present in the "Flashing" folder on the rfl-boot and their extensions are exactly as copied i.e: .img.gz and .img.gz.mb5

I had this issue once and it was due to Windows not showing hidden extensions , right click on the folder they are in an have a look at properties , you need to tick the box to show hidden file extensions ( this is from memory so you may have to fiddle )
Mine did have hidden extensions that I just had to rename .
Might be barking up the wrong tree but it could be that .

I've had a look at the file extensions via the "Properties" box as suggested and the extensions are unchanged. I have also re-formatted the USB sticks, repeated the process of writing the reflash programs and copying the files into the rfi-boot a couple more times but I still get the message "NO VALID FIRMWARE IMAGE FOUND". So, unless one of you wizards can suggest any magic spells I shall once again retreat to the shed. Thanks to all.

Don't give up yet Malc, it sounds like you are having fun ha ha :-)
I am sure you will get there , just hang on in there , I will dig out a Joggler and try to reflash it and see what happens .
To be honest the stock OS is not really what is great about the Joggler , there are so many other usb images for you to try .
Android works great ( apart from video ) and Joli OS was excellent but I can't find a download link for you at the moment , think it was discontinued but it might still work .
Squeezeplay OS is excellent for music and radio as well .

Joli Os is deaded - I still have an image if someone wants it I guess, but it will have security vulnerabilities etc, and may not work well.

I'm back again fellows! after a day of brain rest I decided to try for one of the Android images as suggested by Hawsey. I downloaded Joggler-android-KitKat 2014-04-02.img.gz, extracted it, wrote it to 2 different USB keys (both of which I formatted first), AND.........exactly the same results as before! A few extra lines of text but still getting the "NO VALID FIRMWARE IMAGE FOUND". The Joggler will now boot itself up without the USB key but only to this screen and it then shuts down in 60 secs. I have tried removing the USB key and re-inserting it whilst the screen is still visible and I get the following text:
EXT4-fs UNRECOGNISED MOUNT OPTION "gid=46" OR MISSING VALUE. Don't know whether this is any help to you wizards - certainly not to me! Just when you thought you had got rid of me!!

Hi again Malc yes I thought you'd fallen off the edge ;-)
I had issues just like yours until I got the right formula see below link
Format the stick first using the tool Hp utilities ( you must use this )
Download the image and extract using 7zip , sorry I don't have a link to this ( google , friend etc)
The extracted image needs to end in .img
Write to the stick using Win32 disc imager ( the one in my link)
Switch off joggler.
Insert usb stick
Switch on
Enjoy
:-)
You will get there

Hi Hawsey, The programs you sent the link for are the ones I am using and the programs I am writing to the USB stick are .img files. However, the Win32 disk imager is a slightly different version to the one I have been using so I will try it tomorrow.
Thanks again, Malc.

Also try as many usb sticks as you can lay your hands on, the Joggler can be quite fussy

Also the faster the better up to the limits of usb 2 :-)

The Win 32 Disk Imager program was a newer version (0.9.5) than Hawsey's So I stuck with mine. I have run out of spare USB keys so I took a step back and re-tried the download of the XUBUBTU 14.04 LTS which "sort of" worked last time. It loaded OK and seems to be more responsive than last time. I can now access the menu by touching the small (?) icon in the black border at the very top left of the screen. Have been trying to get it to see my internet connection but no luck yet. One of the desktop icons is INSTALL SQUEEZEPLAY, but it doesn't seem to respond. I'll keep playing, this is begining to look like a project for the winter!

install squeezeplay will need an internet connection. Have you increased the thermal throttling point ?

Getting an internet connection will keep me occupied for a while. As for my "Thermal Throttling Point" - don't ask personal questions, we hardly know each other!!

Tut tut lol , the best way to set it up at first is with a keyboard and mouse , I use a wireless one and it works a treat :-)
The thermal point thing is very easy to do really , see if you can work it out yourself if not post back ..
It really makes a big difference to how snappy the os is imho .
Squeezeplay Is also well worth a go and is very good once you get that internet connection set up

Plug the stick in to your PC an look at the contents , open up the file that says grub.cfg then
At the end of the line that contains "splash" add the parameter "thermal.psv=xx" where xx is the trip point you want for the passive cooling (throttling) - for example to increase the passive throttling point to 80°C use "thermal.psv=80".
80 is good , then save the page at the top , that's it , you are done .
