Thank you, that did it. I now get the Mint desktop and wow... that's pretty nice. Happy smiles on this face. :)

I'm not a fan of Ubuntu; I go way back with SuSE (the original) to the late 1990's and used KDE for years. I started using Mint about four years ago and love it. Just enough power to do what I need, but not so much overhead that it runs slow.

Is it hard to build a later version? I know Mint is now on version 17.
If it's not too difficult, maybe I could roll my own new version? Though I will happily admit, I'm not a programmer at heart and might not be able to do it. If it's something I -could- accomplish, I'd be happy to send back to you to check/validate and distribute as a newer version.

If you want a desktop similar to Linux Mint (Mate edition) you could just get the ubuntu base image 14.04 (or xubuntu) and install Mate on it. http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2014/08/inst ... -14-04-lts

I don't know about how to answer your questions regarding difficulty - it's all relative - depends on your knowledge etc.

hawsey: I'm sorry, but I have no interest in doing another Linux Mint version for the Joggler (nor the free time) - had someone mentioned it earlier in the year when I did two updates it might have happened, but this thread was silent. Xubuntu is a lighter desktop, and works better (if you are primarily just launching xbmc, you should bypass the desktop environment altogether for maximum free ram)

Since I recall Mint is Ubuntu based (I think), your idea of going with the base and installing Mate over the top may be a good way to go. If I try that out, I'll post my results (but it may be a while).

Using Maya would be fine for me except the only drawback appears the repository is no longer supported (or has moved).

Thank you for the honest answer on difficulty. Let's just assume I -don't- have the knowledge level or necessary tools. :)

Honestly, I'm simply tickled I've got Linux up and running on it at all.

Mint is Ubuntu based yeh. It uses the Ubuntu package repositories with their repository overlayed at a higher priority. you will get a similar experience with Ubuntu 14.04+mate as with Linux Mint Mate edition (minus stuff that is specific to Mint)

Sorry, I was mistaken. Apparently the wireless connection I had set up was no longer working and the connection icon disappeared from the task bar near the clock. No matter what I tried, I couldn't get the network to "take." I suspect some kind of corruption during a "reboot." I run a static IP network with MAC authentication so I had to do a special setup and I think something went wrong.

Therefore, I re-imaged the USB thumb drive, did setups all over, and all is well now, including wireless connection and updates. Yea! I even installed NTP to automatically update the clock. Wireless is great, connection is good, applications work as expected.

The only downside is that some dialogs are taller than the default pixel count allowed, so things like the Save and Cancel buttons are too low to see. I may have to figure out how to do a remote X session to it from another computer.

So far I'm having a lot of fun.

The build is fantastic as far as I'm concerned, despite some dialogs extending lower than the bottom of the screen. It's a true Mint install with all the basic whistles and bells. It's navigable with the touchscreen and the on-screen keyboard conveniently located in the task tray. It's really quite awesome.

I just need to figure out what cool thing I want to do with it now. :)

You can move windows to show offscreen stuff via onscreen keyboard. Try locking alt with two presses, and grabbing a window.

I can confirm pressing alt twice on the OSK and then pressing and moving a window works.

Hey Thanks Buzz!
I was out of town for a conference in Las Vegas, but when I got back found your suggestion on moving the windows and it worked! Great stuff.

Not sure I have it available currently - but you could try taking the server image (or the xubuntu one) and installing mate desktop on it which will be similar to Linux Mint (but more up to date than our last Mint image) - http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2014/08/inst ... -14-04-lts
