Joggler has black screen :(

Post by Alive_Inside »

After not using my Joggler for 2-3 years I decided to blow the dust off it and install a new operating system.

I cleaned it up, found the power adapter, plugged it in and nothing :( Just a black screen, no O2 logo, no nothing :( There is however a green light which slowly flashes at the back, so there is obviously power going to the Joggler.

Help!!!

You definitely plugged the correct power adapter in? It should be 5V 4A... and nobody's plugged anything else into it in the meantime, or dropped it?

Did you take it apart to clean it up ? If you did you might have just disturbed the cable to the screen .

Yes, plugged in the correct Open Peak adapter, says Output: +5V 4A

No, I simply wiped the outside with a duster.

Historically I have had a jiggled joggler. Probably got that way when it was shipped to me.

The LCD display had issues. I took the Joggler apart.

The loosened LCD screen connector had almost fallen out of place.

Take it apart and have a look see.

Thank you! I take it you can remove the screen simply by unclipping it? I noticed that the screen comes apart quite easily from the bottom but is fixed quite firmly at the top.

Let us know what you see when you take it apart.

If it received a jolt of too much electricity you will be able to tell maybe looking at the board.

Easy to fix as the Joggler is a very resilient and well built little machine.

Don't fret; baby steps.

BTW welcome to the Joggler Forum

It would be great if I could get this working again!

I've removed the screen by unclipping it. I have not taken the sticker off or undone the screws as per the video as I felt that this was unnecessary.

The attached photos show that the screen is indeed connected.

Any other thoughts?

Yeah; push the LCD connectors in anyways. Also push in the connectors you see on the right aux circuit board depicted in your pictures above.

Carefully power it up again while apart (do not let circuit boards touch). See anything?

Next steps.....

If you have a volt meter check the output power of the AC to DC power supply while not plugged in to the Joggler to make sure it is 5VDC.

The center hole is the positive voltage and the outside barrel is the ground.

I have not seen a bad Openpeak power supply yet; but check it anyways.

Remove bottom part depicted in picture from shell and flip it up so you can see the socketed boot ROM chip.

Make sure that the circuit boards do not touch each other while live voltage testing.

Power it up again (be careful!) and watch the little LEDs next to the chip.
Joggler-LEDs.jpg

The little LEDs next to the socketed chip will flicker when Joggler is booting even if there is no screen connected.

Concurrently look at the screen and see if you see anything.

If the LCD backlights are out you will still see stuff on the screen (it will be difficult to see)

Make sure the circuit boards do not touch each other or any metal touches the circuit boards.

Do the little LEDs next to the socketed chip light up and flicker? If not then the board is dead and not getting any power.

Underneath you will see another little board connected to the main motherboard. It is the USB, Network and Power board. There are two wires for power and a little ribbon cable from the little board to the main Joggler motherboard. Follow the red one to the motherboard. This red cable is the power (5VDC) to the Joggler board.

Look carefully at the little SMDs (surface mount devices) next to the red wire on both sides of the circuit board. See any burn marks?

I bought some Jogglers like this some time ago - they were cheap and advertised as spares or repair. I've not looked at them, but could it be that the EFI has become corrupted ? I don't recall if the OP/O2/ Whatever logo is displayed or not if the EFI is corrupted.

And I have not done an EFI fix before, so don't know first hand.

However, this is a useful thread as it may contain what I need to do to fix those Jogglers. Thing is I know from the state of the Joggler that someone has been inside and done something. What, I don't know yet, or maybe ever !
