Newbie questions: how I want to use my joggler (help needed)

Post by hsbcarter »

Hi all,

I have just purchased my first joggler (sorry I am late to the game!) and want to describe how I am going to try and use my joggler and then ask a couple of questions (if you can bear with what I am trying to achieve and can help me answer my questions - then thanks in advance).

I have a spotify premium account. I want to use the 3.5mm headphone jack on the joggler to plug into an old amp, which in turn will power some marine/speedboat speakers in my bathroom.
I want to use my android phone (Nexus 4 - Kitkat) - to control the joggler/spotify from the bathroom rather than having to use the joggler's touchscreen which will be in the bedroom.

So here are my questions:

A) I think I want to use the squeezeplay OS and then install the spotify app - but looks like I need to have LMS installed on my PC in order to get connected to Spotify? Is this absolutely right - I didnt really want to have to have my PC on just to play spotify from the joggler?

B) If this is so, how painless is it to install the LMS on my buffalo linkstation live - I am not really very technical - and the installation looks pretty scary tbh

C) I think I remember seeing that squeezeplay on the joggler can be controlled by an android app - I hope so - does anyone recommend one. Happy to pay £5ish for the best app.

D) I am not really an audiophile so will the sound output from the 3.5mm headphone jack really be that bad in a bathroom with 20w speakers or do you think I can live with it? I have seen people recommending USB soundcards etc, but will I really need to do this?

Thanks in advance - cant wait to receive my joggler and start to play!

Cheers,

HSB

a) you can install lms on the joggler itself. I don't have premium spotify so not sure how well it works on the joggler and joggler's lms but there's a plugin for it. Others will chip in here I'm sure.

c) I control mine with a free iphone app and it works extremely well. Its the logitech squeezebox app which is also available for free on google play. There are probably others too but this suits my simple needs very well.

d) all of my jogglers have speakers attached to the 3.5 jack. A couple have soundcards for extra oomph in rooms where I need to drown out noise but speakers by themselves are certainly sufficient for general usage.

A) Install LMS on the Joggler using SqpOS. After you've installed SqpOS (better to run it from USB if you want to run player and server from the same device), go to Settings > Advanced > Additional Features > Logitech Media Server then install it. When the installation is finished the Joggler will reboot. After installation you can access the server interface from your computer at <your joggler's IP address>:9000 - you are only accessing the server, not running it, from your computer.

On the server interface, choose Settings in the bottom right corner, choose the Plugins tab, scroll to the bottom and select Show all 3rd party plugins and click the Apply button. Now choose Triode's 3rd party Spotify plugin (official Logitech version doesn't run on the Joggler) and apply, don't deselect the official Spotify plugin; I had problems when I did. Once the plugin is installed and the server has restarted, go to the Advanced tab in LMS settings, choose Spotify from the drop-down on the left of the page, then enter your username and password and apply. You should now be able to access Spotify on your Joggler; it should be under My Apps and it has an orange icon, not the usual Spotify green. If you hold your finger over the Spotify addon a menu will appear allowing repositioning of the addon in the menu or adding it to the home page.

Spotify on the Joggler is very easy to use and my wife and kids use it all the time. There are lots of Squeezebox controllers for Android and iOS that allow you to control the player remotely.

Thanks for all your advice - I am really looking forward to installing it and seeing how it works - just got to persuade the other half to allow me to recess the joggler outside the bathroom (could be a while :) ) . My joggler that arrives in the next week and has had no upgrades from when it was originally sold, so can I install the SqueezeOS using a USB straight over the top of the original OS or do I have to update the OS to the last Openpeak version?

You will be able to run Squeezeplay OS from a USB stick, it doesn't need to be installed to the device. If you power down Squeezeplay OS, pull the stick and reboot, you will still have the Joggler's OS on the internal storage or, highly recommended, PnPIII if you install that.

Don't be scared to ask questions on the forum, people are always willing to help. Having said that, there's a lot of good information already here, or the birdslikewires site, if you look in the right places. The forum search facility works well and I use it all the time.

So, I got my joggler yesterday - got it on the wireless network quite easily. Downloaded the USB image from birdslikewires, plugged it into the joggler and it appear there. Then installed the LMS (I presume it installed the LMS on the internal memory). Then went to the PC and went to the IP address of the joggler plus :9000 and downloaded the triode plug-in.

Used the squeezebox native app on my android to control it. Now have a £30 wireless music system with no Sonos in sight ;-)

Thank you all - where do I donate?

Nope - LMS is installed on the usb memory. If you use the usb route then internal memory remains unused.

it's good isn't it? You even learn a small amount of how to use linux along the way.

If you look at top left on BirdsLIkeWires there's a bird, hover it and 'feed the birds' will take you to the donation link.

I echo hawsey - welcome to the forum. You'll find that this is one of the best-mannered, most helpful and informative hangouts on the web. It won't be long before you're passing on your knowledge to other users.

It's definitely worth getting more jogglers, particularly if you're using Squeezeplay. They make a fantastic networked music system and it's great to have them all synced and playing music throughout the house, especially for parties.
