PnP III & LMS question

Post by Aquitaine »

Hello,

This is my first post here. So hello to all.

I just started off with a joggler in my music system. Nice little device ;-)

Have been testing and trying out different ways of using the joggler.

I have my music stored on a Nas. Witch at the moment also runs lms. The nas has a hibernation function. It works fine however idle running squeezebox devices have a tendency to probe for a receiver ect. Hence preventing the nas from hibernating.

Now i am wondering for testing purposes if i can stop LMS on the Joggler from booting at start-up ?

Thanks,
Maarten

Yeah, you can hash out lines in one of the boot files - will check later. You can stop lms running also via swf manager.
"EVERY DAY I'M JOGGLERING!"
Jogglering since Dec '09;
Tinkering with Jogglers since Feb '10 thanks to PMJ, Jogtools, PnP & sqpOS;
Gave something back Feb '12 to Apr '14 with PnP Mk II & PnP III;
Finally 'completed' PnP III Apr '15!

Dave, Thank you for your answer.

I stopped lms via swf by removing the line 'run lms' or some thing like it. I can't really do proper testing as my network is in a state of chaos at the moment.

However my next question is ... How to tern it back on again ?
----
After a reboot of the joggler and some testing i now have the following situation:

In swf the run_lms line is gone, but when i log in to the web interface of the Joggler and chose access lms the squzeebox web interface is there in a few seconds.

So i guess it is still running ?

PNP3 is awesome for the extra stuff but IMO if you are using the Joggler for music only then Roobarbs SqueezeplayOS is the way forward.

Also depending on your NAS you may find LMS is actually better running on the Joggler than the NAS, this is what I do, my NAS still stores my music files but LMS runs on a Joggler.

Jimbob, how do you find squeezeplay to be better compared to running it on your nas ?

I have a synology ds213+ it works pretty smooth, except for hibernation issues..

Well I have a much crapper NAS than yours (an old Linkstation) so the difference will be much greater for me.

Having said that there may still be some advantages to LMS on a Joggler with SqPOS.

- Intel Atom vs Arm processor, some plugins may not run on Arm processors
- Debian Linux means easy availability and installation of LMS and other stuff like the LMS Shairplay plugin.

I'm not sure how well the Synology handles transcoding files but the Joggler easily manages any transcoding I've thrown at it so far. Transcoding from APE, WMA and transcoding to MP3 for remote streaming are all no problem at all for the Joggler.

With a better NAS I might not have bothered using the Joggler for LMS TBH

This is what I've done too. I've got two Jogglers running as SqpOS players and I bought another to use as an ethernet wired, SqpOS based LMS server (and occasional player). It's a dream setup for me and since Mplayer has been incorporated into Squeezeplay OS I've not had any transcoding issues with either local files or streaming media.

I did have Squeezeplug running LMS on a Raspberry Pi, which was great when it worked but it was flaky and prone to crashing. Running a Joggler as an LMS server has been a vastly superior experience with one caveat; I had to delete the Display Standby applet because, even though it was disabled, it would activate itself randomly and my Jogglers would lose connection or sync. My clock screensaver would also switch to a blank screen. Deleting the applet has fixed these issues.

P.S. Sorry for the loud noise. That was me popping the champagne in celebration of my 1,000th forum post, although I still have a long way to go to catch up with pete.
