BBC iplayer ourside uk?

Post by ttherapo »

I have pnp isntalled on both of my Joggler devices and i am really happy. I am a little dissapointed that BBC iplayer does not work outside the UK. I searched the internet and found it is possible with a pc, but i did not find any information for the Joggler. I asked some time ago to in Pnp forums but guys there could not answer. Therefore can anyone please help me how to do this?

I think the only way you can bypass geo-locking is by paying for a DNS redirect service and manually setting the DNS settings on the Joggler. It isn't illegal as such, but it does violate the iPlayer terms of use, so we probably shouldn't be discussing it on the forum.

How do I change VPN settings and what are the settings I should insert, just for educational purposes?

Don't use a VPN. Use a DNS redirect service if you must because they are faster and can be set up on different devices. If you want to know what they're all about Google 'UnoDNS'. They have an eight day free trial so you can see if it works for you.

I don't know how to change DNS settings on a PnPIII Joggler because I haven't done it.

If you modify the DNS settings in your router, then all devices should work ...

I may be wrong but I'm sure that changing DNS isn't enough in itself; the server needs to be one that handles the request and spoofs the user region to deliver geo-locked content. I think this requires a UnoDNS or Unblock-US account, both of which have a free trial period to see if it works for you.

Some people are uncomfortable with routing all their computer traffic using DNS redirect and VPN is supposedly more secure, but that may be a little paranoid. The advantage with the DNS service is that it can be done on a device by device basis, e.g. Xbox 360 has UK Netflix, Apple TV has US Netflix etc. Changing the DNS settings on the router (if your router settings allow it - mine doesn't) will send all internet traffic through the DNS redirect, so all devices would get content from the same region.

@ Man in a van - iPlayer Global is only available as an app for Apple devices and isn't much use for a pimped Joggler.

You only need to to put the redirect DNS (address in the router) - most services then require that you authorise the dns service via a web address (usually only once, or whenever the router is rebooted).

Yes, although DNS changes alone don't spoof your IP address. It's the user IP address that normally determines whether a service is geo-locked or not. The UnoDNS servers (or Unblock-US or SmartDNS etc.) will spoof the user IP to allow geo-locked services (e.g. Hulu for UK users, iPlayer for US users). Without these DNS 'tunneling' services, you're wasting your time with a DNS change.

As mentioned in my earlier post, my router doesn't allow user-specified global DNS changes, so I would have to resort to setting it up on a device-by-device basis.

Yes, I know that a smartdns service is necessary! You're labouring the point

What router do you have?

I thought I'd clarify it for people on the forum who weren't aware or hadn't used a Smart DNS service. I thought your post that only said "If you modify the DNS settings in your router, then all devices should work ..." was a bit misleading. I thought your follow up post that said "You only need to to put the redirect DNS (address in the router)" was similarly misleading. You don't only need to change the DNS, you also need to subscribe to a DNS tunneling service. I realised that you probably knew this but I was addressing my post to the wider community on the forum.

What router I have is immaterial because I wouldn't use a DNS redirect service for my main internet gateway. I like using different settings on my devices to allow me to use different regions. I can access US Netflix on my ATV2 and UK Netflix on the Xbox 360. The UK version, although it has a smaller library, has some content that the US version doesn't.

Fair enough! I think it's all clarified now.
