Run LMS on Joggler or leave running on Raspberry Pi

Post by simono »

Currently have Squeezebox players streaming from a Raspberry Pi running SqueezePlug connected to a 1TB usb hd. Now I have the Joggler as my SB Touch replacement I'm wondering if there would be any audio benefits to running LMS on the Joggler.

Should have mentioned that I have the Pi connected using a wired ethernet connection via a hub.

What do you mean by audio benefits?

I have LMS 7.8 running on both Pi and Joggler - can't say I notice any great differences.

It depends if you're running Squeezeplay OS or PnPIII Squeezeplay on the Joggler. I think Mplayer is available with the newer versions of Squeezeplay OS and this allows more addons that rely on Mplayer for transcoding, mainly WMA streams.

I have a Pi and switch between servers depending on my needs. Most often I'll use the Pi version of LMS purely for the WMA capability and greater compatibility but if I want to sync my Spotify playlists with other devices, I'll choose the Joggler's LMS server. In my experience, syncing with the Joggler LMS causes less out-of-sync errors than the Pi installation.

My suggestion would be to run them both and see which suits you better. For me, both versions have their advantages depending on how I'm using Squeezeplay at the time.

Was wondering if running LMS on the Joggler (Squeezebox OS) would provide benefits as it is essentially on the same box, or whether the one Joggler handling playback and LMS for serving multiple devices would struggle.

Thanks for the other comments, will give them both a try :)

I thought the same thing about running LMS on PnPIII but I can't say there's been any noticeable quality or reliability difference. LMS runs quite smoothly alongside all the other PnPIII stuff. I can't vouch for running LMS with Squeezeplay OS because I only have that set up as player-only.

Hi,
One setup I use is SQPOS on a Joggler and a Pi running Squeezeplug, both on the wired network.
I added an 8Gb USB SSD to the Pi with a pointer in the boot routine to the OS running Squeezeserver on the SSD
(something I'd like on a Joggler if do-able).
This makes for pretty good response times so far and no hiccups.
As for how much it influences sound quality I can only guess, but very large files play with no buffering or glitches.
I think the choice of DAC will be more important re: quality.
At the moment I'm tinkering with a USB DAC and will post my experiences good or bad.

I've noticed the sound quality on a Touch is clearer using LMS on the Joggler than on the Pi - no idea why this should be so! the Pi is wired and the Joggler is wifi - response times are hardly different.

Hi Simono,

Jogglers which I have prepared for friends run both SQPOS and LMS easily.
The only problem being memory usage - more music folders & artwork = more memory the LMS library takes.
Removing unnecessary items (see guides on Birdslikewires) allowed libraries of 500 + CD's with room to spare.
