Joggler update...help for newbie....

Post by robashmee »

Hi

After enjoying the Joggler for many years, the update has basically turned this into a pretty rubbish clock.
I have looked around the forum and seen all the wonderful things that people have done to reload, refresh, revert, add new stuff and take away the rubbish, so at least it is abit more useful. I have mine mounted in the hallway, so do really want to throw it away, but without the radio feed at least, it is pretty useless.
As a complete novice, I have no idea what to do next. All the talk of re-flashing, telnet and Umbungo ;) are really confusing me. If there a compelte idiots guide to getting back to something near what I had, or indeed anywhere I can post the joggler off to to get someone else to do it for me :D ?
I am happy to give anything a go, but really looking for an idiots guide to...
Thanks
Adrian

Hi ,
i think what you are after is PnP III which basically will give you almost everything you had before bar the messaging facilities ; and also a lot more besides .
I think it would be worth waiting a while though as you could go through the process and have your Joggler update again automatically to what O2 want .
While you are waiting for things to settle with the above you could try out one of the many images that the joggler will happily boot i.e Joli os , Xubuntu , Mint , Android both Gingerbread and ICS (found on mobiles ) , or XP .
The process is simple and great fun once you have managed to master the simple steps required.
Basically , download the image of your choice usually from the first post of the thread of the OS in question ; click on the file you downloaded and extract it to say your desktop , the file will now end in .img.
All you do now is write it to a usb stick (8gb will do for most) using
https://launchpad.net/win32-image-writer (version 0.3 worked best for me )
Plug it in to your joggler , power on and you are good to go .
This would be a good starting point for you

or Joli Os from Buzz,s site is excellent for your needs . http://joggler.exotica.org.uk/jolicloud/
It might sound daunting but is great when you manage to get there
Just ask if you get stuck

The instructions on this thread

Hi Rob, we're here to help!

The Jolicloud link that Hawsey posted above has pretty good instructions which, once you have done once or twice, you can apply the same method to any of the operating systems posted here.

No need to post your Joggler anywhere if you like the idea of booting off a memory stick and not messing with the factory software - for a slightly inflated price, a number of ebay sellers sell USB sticks with JoliOS preinstalled. Just plug it into your joggler, power it on and enjoy. Perhaps we could start a similar service here in the market place forum.

I was going to suggest that it would be easier to post a couple of USB sticks to a forum member (one for the reflash tool and another for PnP III or JoliOS etc.) I'd be happy to create them for somebody who was struggling.

I can understand a newbie's frustration. As the forum gets larger, it's getting harder to find basic instructions for the beginner.

@robashmee - I must stress to that you shouldn't get rid of the Joggler. If you enjoyed it as it was, you'll love the pimped version.

I know its way beyond my skills but would it be feasible to have a sort of reflashing tool / pnpIII image build which would restore to factory state then install PnP III all at once?

Hi robashmee
Just wanted to let you know that with a little (ok, a lot) of patience, you can do this yourself. I am a complete techo novice but with the help of some very kind folk on this forum managed to reflash my dead joggler. Got a massive kick out of doing it myself too! Haven't yet summoned up the courage for PnPIII but that's besides the point....

That being said, Gegs, i would have loved to have someone do the work for me. Almost grovelled to the forum in desperation myself but thought no one would take me seriously...!

I Think it would be brilliant if the forum could provide that sort of help!!
