Am I spotting correctly that you're using the onboard PATA connector as well? I'd heard varying reports as to the reliability of it - I take it it's working fine for you?

The PATA interface is perfectly OK. It may depend on what you've got hooked up to it though I guess.

I don't think it's really usable for most people though. Soldering on that connector is pretty tough. Normally I don't mind 0.2-0.5mm pitch stuff but the contacts are so tall that it's hard to get it on there without any shorts.

I'll be watching that wiki too. There's a spare LCD with speakers in my garage that I had wondered if it could be paired to one of my Jogglers for the kids to use. Had a quick google for LVDS to VGA. Might be doable. :cracks knuckles:

I'd like to know what J1 is too...
If I had a dead Joggler I'd pull the Poulsbo off and see what those connections go to... (I assume that's what they're hooked up to)
We can tell what J1 probably isn't:
* VGA - No ADC on the board
* DVI - No TMDS transmitters on the board
* JTAG - Probably not, it seems to have too many connections
* More USB Ports - nah, these are mostly present on the other side
* HDA Bus - pointless, too many connections, and it's on the wrong side
* PEX - Doubt it, I think the other lane is connected to that non fitted wifi chip
* IDE - Connector already present elsewhere
* LPC - Connecor already present elsewhere
So that leaves:
* SDVO - Quite possible, it's got about the right number of contacts, also the silkscreen says "XDP" eXternal Display Port? If I were OpenPeak I'd put a connector on there for that - it'd definitely be useful for development.
* GPIO's - Poulsbo has 14 or so, so this is possible
- I'd be stuffed if I could figure out what else -

Turns out I was wrong on all counts. XDP is 'eXtended Debug Port'. J1 has JTAG and another high speed debug interface. I could go into more detail but I doubt this would be of interest anyone much...

I hoped J1 might be PCIe or something useful.
Gonna carefully open my old monitor in the next few days and see what's inside...
If I only stick to 1024x768 as my desktop resolution, will the single to double channel bridge still be a requirement?

So long as it's 1366x768/1280x800/1152x864 or under you should be able to hook it straight up to the Joggler. Anything over this and you're going to hit the problem I did.

Thanks, inaxeon. It's an older LCD, but I can't remember the resolution. There's another old LCD attached to one of the kid's PCs, and this might be another candidate. I'm putting some time aside on Thursday for this.

Hello all, Running a joggler with the latest debranded "o2" SW, also running a live USB ubuntu 12.04 build.
question as were looking at non standard panels on the joggler,
I have a old toughbook CF-M34, runs a 400mhz single core x86, uses the case to cool, not forced intake. in theory using the PATA mod and as the panel is a 1024x768 res with ubuntu, in theory i could rehome the joggler?
any suggestions welcome.
And yes i know i'm canibalising a joggler, which isnt good, but id rather i give it a new lease of life than bin it.

The challenges of a project like this are:
A) Get a datasheet for the Panel, determine if it's compatible with the Joggler. If it's got a single channel LVDS interface with 18 or 24 bits, it'll work.
B) Figure out how to power up and turn on the backlight inverter. This can be pretty tough, almost no backlight inverters have datasheets. SMBus driven inverters are particularly tough to figure out. I could provide some assistance here.
C) Wire up the panel to the Joggler's LVDS interface. If it's a single channel panel, this is pretty straight forward, albeit fiddly.
D) Timings, You'll have to digest all of the timings from the panel's datasheet, and use those to calculate a valid DTD for the IEGD, or a Modeline for Linux.
And, if it all fails, you're pretty much stuffed without equipment like high end oscilloscope & logic analyser.
I'll tell you what, If you get through A, B, and C, I'll write up your DTD for you as this is the most complex and experience requiring step

I actually spent quite a while hacking the firmware on those to run the Joggler's panel
I'd suggest you read my wiki page on it (http://www.jogglerwiki.com/wiki/Using_t ... DVI_screen) and decide if you seriously want to do this. Yes it's possible and I could help out but to be honest, I don't think it's worth the messing around.
At the very least you'd have to buy the controller board, the programmer and do all the wiring including the backlight power supply. It's a lot of work for very little gain!
When I first started on that I was really hoping to create a little 800x480 touch screen with DVI port at the back, but I found that while it *could* be done, it'd never work while the graphics output was being driven by the VGA BIOS i.e. before windows/linux boots, which kind of sucks, and makes it somewhat uninteresting.
