Updated OpenPeak Firmware (Version 30301)

Post by roobarb! » Tue Nov 06, 2012 5:39 pm

________________________________________

Version 30301 - 21st August 2018

Use the Reflashing Tool to install.
________________________________________

I decided to do a little 'tidy' of the OpenPeak firmware image. The third partition as provided by the 30291 reflasher is unused; it used to contain an earlier version of the OS for backup purposes, but I've never known it to work properly and it appears to have been ditched. In essence, that means 256MB of the 1GB internal storage is wasted and sat there empty.

What I've done is to take the final release of the OpenPeak firmware and make a few tweaks, re-versioning it as 30300.

UPDATE: A mere six years later, I've revisited the image and made another tweak, producing version 30301.

Following the shutdown of OpenPeak's servers, OpenFrames have been calling out into the wild for updates and config files, receiving no response. With the ownership of openpeak.net now uncertain, open for purchase by anybody, it seemed sensible to redirect these calls in the hope that we might one day be able to push EFI updates to locked-down devices. This represents the only way that OpenFrame 2 devices with locked EFI firmware can be unlocked, without flashing and replacing the soldered EFI chip.

If anybody can shed any light on the response an OpenFrame is expecting when it calls the server, that would be a big help. I really wish we had the old servers to query just one last time!

Because I'd not be able to afford the asking price for openpeak.net, and because binaries can't be modified in size without breaking them, I've opted instead for openbeak.net. There's a pun in there, if you look hard enough.

Other than the software update server configuration, this is what changed from 30291:
  • Removed the empty backup partition (mmcblk0p3).
  • Allocated the recovered space to the /media partition (mmcblk0p4).
  • Enabled SSH and SCP by default.
  • Added 'setpasswd' command for easily changing the default password.
  • Enabled the 'update from USB stick' feature that was removed.
Username and password are both set to 'joggler'.

There are some technical details on the page for the update if you're interested in using the re-enabled local USB update feature, or want to see how the MMC is now laid out.

So, please give it a try if it seems interesting and let me know how it performs for you!

Hi. Can someone please clarify something for me. If SSH and SCP are enabled by default on this new image, does that mean that if I use this instead of the openpeak one I won't need to telnet in when installing PNPIII? Or does it mean something completely different? I'm sorry but I still don't grasp some of this (actually, that's not true - I still don't grasp most of this...) ;) Thanks!

Sorry, Andrew, but I can't promise I'll be doing any of that. I'm interested in a nice stable base for other people to work from (see PnPIII), not producing some all-singing, all-dancing app collection. I'm more likely to remove things than add them.

Having said that I do have a few newer apps that came from the OpenFrame 2. I may swap things around a bit, but it's pretty low on the list right now.

You can still telnet in to install PnP III. You could also SSH in to install it on the tweaked OpenPeak OS. Trying to install it by booting from the USB still won't work as it isn't set up for this (yet).

Doesn't Squeezeplay allow you to create playlists? There is certainly an add-on or two in Logitech Media Server for managing playlists.

The Video player in PnP III (installed on an OpenPeak OS at least - not checked on the original o2 version) DOES allow seeking. Just press the 'control' button in the bottom right corner to cycle between basic controls, volume and seek functions.
I do have few newer apps that came from the OpenFrame 2
I've not found much of any worth to add to the current collection to be honest, but shout if you think something could be included.

Just to clarify, SSH (Secure SHell) allows you to do pretty much the same thing as Telnet, only with many, many more features and over an encrypted connection. Telnet is all plain text, so if you use it over the internet, anyone with the knowledge could intercept it and see what you're typing. In fact, Telnet is one thing I'd consider removing... there's nothing you can do over Telnet that you can't do better over SSH.

SCP (Secure CoPy) is used for file transfers. It uses an SSH connection over which the files are passed, again in an encrypted fashion so they can't be intercepted.

The update does mean that if offbeatdave makes some changes to the PnPIII installer, it would be possible to install it from a USB stick and not need to Telnet or SSH into the device. But changes would be needed - similarly the standalone SqueezePlay USB installer isn't working yet because I haven't had chance to tweak it. There are some instructions on the web page as to how this can be done, though.

That's a shame - I was hoping you might be able to suggest which ones were worth including! :)

Is the alternative Music / Media player any better than the default one? That's the only thing I remember that piqued my interest before my OF2 turned itself into a Telio brick. I've still got it running the Telio OS (not reflashed it yet), so I have apps in Norwegian if anyone's interested! ;)

Edit: I've just noticed... Telio still appear to be selling the Telio Touch! Look here and click on the Equipment link...

Thank you for your reply (both of you!). Oooh, a little worrying - the telnet hacking thing I mean - but presumably it's only unsecure whilst you're actually doing it?

I have used winSCP once before to get into my joggler to add a repo to the xbmc os. Thanks to iLLiac4 who was kind enough to tell me what to do ;). I've just had a look at it (winSCP) and I think that it can do ssh too. Can anyone tell me in baby steps how I would use this to get into and add commands to my joggler. Or is there a better programme? I'm sorry, this has probably been covered numerous times before...

Yes, and you'd have to be doing it over the internet rather than on your home network, as your router should be keeping badduns out. Unless there's someone nefarious that's hacked into your wireless network (or connected to your ethernet!). Mind you, with no password on the Joggler's root account by default, you could barely call it hacking! ;)

WinSCP (IIRC) only does file transfer; you want PuTTY to actually open a shell session and type commands as you would over Telnet.

Download it, double-click to run it (no install required), pop your Joggler's IP address in and choose SSH as the protocol (it'll talk over Telnet too, if you wanted to). Then hit the 'Open' button. Ah, yes - probably should have mentioned that the username and password are both 'joggler' in 30300.

If you have WinSCP running just click on Command in the menu then select Putty and the ssh window will open automatically logged on to the Joggler. Simples!

Thanks guys!

Roobarb!, I attempted this to create this image but didn't get very far. I dowloaded the 2 files from your website (for the openpeak update) and went to the follow the reflash instructions. I've unpacked the largest of the 2 files ready to write to my usb but thereafter didn't know whether I was arthur or martha... I couldn't adapt the formula and then didn't know how many of the steps were relevant for this stick (the openpeak update that this is tweaking was a single file).

I know it's me and not you (sounds like a break up line!) but any help would be appreciated. Alternatively you could tell me to bu**er off and use the one I already have!

EDIT: Don't worry - I'll use my existing image and get my head around this one when I have more time - am currently embroiled in installing squeezeplay os!! :)

No problem. A Joggler music player supporting playlists would be handy though for non-Squeeze use.

Ah, no - what you want to do is write the Reflashing system to the USB stick. Just follow these instructions, starting from 'Part 1: Create the Reflashing Device'. Once you've created the reflash stick you should have a partition called 'rfl-boot', which will have a folder on it called 'reflash'. Copy these two files:

of1_30300_openpeak.img.gz
of1_30300_openpeak.img.gz.md5

Into that 'reflash' directory. Don't unpack them or modify them, or change their names.

Eject the stick, plug into the Joggler, sit back and watch.

would you believe I'm brilliant at assembling Ikea flat packs? Thanks for clarifying - I'll try again tomorrow. :)

Thank you Roobarb!

Yesterday my SB OS player went to just booting the O2 screen; so I will give it a try. I did also purchase a few of the flash chips if I need them.

What are Ikea flat packs?

I was sure they had Ikea in the US, perhaps it's the 'flat pack' term that is an British thing! Does anyone remember that great scene in Fight Club where the protagonist walks into his home that has come to resemble the IKEA (renamed FURNI) catalogue? http://reel3.com/fight-club-and-the-ikea-personality/

But (getting back on topic) you're right, if you can assemble flat pack furniture, you can flash a Joggler!
