Alerty - An App I've Written!

Post by roobarb! » Mon Jun 17, 2013 3:23 pm

Just a little shameless self-promotion here; one of the reasons I've not been Jogglering as much as I would have liked recently is this little app. It's an interface to the AlertMe series of home automation / security kits. I was never a big fan of their own app, so decided to try and write my own!

At the moment AlertMe only sell their Energy Kit, which for £50 gets you an energy use display, meter reader and the little Hub. You can then add extra devices as you wish; SmartPlugs and Keyfobs being the most useful, as you can remotely power on and off your devices with the plugs and detect the presence of the keyfobs. The Security kit they used to sell has been rolled into the British Gas Safe & Secure system, which unfortunately the app doesn't currently support, but if you can pick up a Security Hub on eBay then you can use all the same sensors and create rules for when keyfobs leave or arrive, or when the alarm is set.

That's enough plugging for now, I think. To tie this in to the Joggler, interestingly I did see 'openpeak' as a supported platform in one of the APIs. I'd love to know what was planned for that collaboration, although it is no doubt defunct now. Perhaps something like the Cisco home energy devices based on the OpenFrame 2?

What a shame there's no Android version!

Ah, someone else has written an Android one - plus I have no Android devices, so just the one platform for me!

FYI the Openpeak 7e device that I collected today boots up with a British Gas logo (top left after boot, not the initial logo, which is Openpeak) and has an AlertMe app.

I tried booting SqueezePlayOS from USB but, for now at least, it is not working. I do see USB activity (USB stick has an activity light).

It might still be connected to the British Gas cloud.

Disconnect it from the internet and try the blind keyboard typing to manually boot from the USB stick.

Remember that these have a soldered on EFI boot bios chip and you cannot do a hot swap if it gets messed up.

I have two that connected to a utilities company in California and another one from Illinois and tested a couple of the Cisco ones.

I was able to rewrite the EFI boot bios with a generic Openpeak and Avaya boot bios.

It's got an AlertMe app? Wowsers, this is a whole new avenue I didn't know they'd explored!

If you do manage to get the thing to boot from USB, would you be able to grab a copy of the internal memory? It would be great to take a look at their AlertMe app.

Sorry - too late.
Because I could not get USB boot to work properly, I overwrote internal memory and did not have a backup.
Risky but worked.
