Re: Joggler Power Consumption

Wow, hadn't even considered PoE. My NAS needs are pretty sporadic, I've had a few of the leading brands offerings the last few years but have always found them frustratingly limited, and they don't seem to compete much on power consumption -I really want something that WOLs and sleeps reliably. Buil...

Re: Joggler Power Consumption

Ah, I had a quick search for a power consumption thread but couldn't find one, I'll have a more thorough dig. Yeh it's phenomenal to me that something as (usefully) powerful as the joggler can be so efficient, while my NAS which was made 5 years later is so relatively power hungry. The only one I've...

Joggler Power Consumption

I'd imagine a lot of people are already perfectly aware of this, but the other day I bought a power meter to check consumption on various things, and when I put it on the Joggler I was amazed at how low it actually was. I read 5W with the screen off and 8w with it on. For someone like me who frets a...

Re: Remote Desktop Software

Yeh, that would work well for normal tv. I'm just thinking that I might be watching something on catch up and rather than going to iplaya on the joggler via xbmc or web, finding the show then finding the point where I left off, I could just easily open up what I was already looking at. (Also with so...

Re: Remote Desktop Software

Unfortunately I don't have Media Centre as you have to buy it in win 8. Didn't realise you could do that though, interesting. What I might want to stream could be in a web browser or some other program so I think I need to show the whole screen / desktop to cover all options. Thanks for the tip, I'l...

Remote Desktop Software

I have a windows 8.1 media pc that I want to see from my kitchen joggler (mainly to watch the snooker while doing the washing up!). The joggler is running one of Buzz' fab xubuntu builds (12.4), does anyone use remote desktop viewing software on their jogglers, or can recommend some please?

Re: Ubuntu / Xubuntu for the O2 Joggler.

Yup the MACs ok. I have tried different cables, but yes trying a different router is an idea, ill try it later -some kind of communication misspeak between them maybe. Reading online it seems theres so many issues with this Realtek NIC, each with their own fix, tho nothing works permanently. Just a ...

Re: Ubuntu / Xubuntu for the O2 Joggler.

So it wouldn't come up yesterday, i compared the ifconfigs when working and not and they're exactly the same -apart from the number of tx and rx bytes. What's odd is that unless it has a huge cache, Ubuntu software centre seems to get data, but nothing on the local network talks. But also pinging th...

Re: Ubuntu / Xubuntu for the O2 Joggler.

Hi Buzz, bizarrely, now I can't get it to fail! (It did once but i lost my saved file with the ifconfig text).

When it's going wrong I get a few of these in dmesg;

r8169: eth0: link down
ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): eth0: link is not ready

Anyhoo, working today, all is well, cheers.

Network probelms on Xubuntu

Hey, I've been struggling with a strange intermittant networking problem, I wondered if anyone had any ideas of how to fix it. Basically the issue is that even tho I get an IP address I don't get any network 'stuff' happening. The time doesnt update, squeezeplay wont see the server, etc. This happen...

Re: Native Squeezeplay but can't play WMA files

Not sure if this helps, but I remember struggling for ages to get WMA files to play when i first set up my Ubuntu based, music-on-nas joggler, but then gave up and never got round to converting everything to mp3 -which i didnt really want to do anyway. But then Greenbhoy started this thread and i th...

I think WMA won't play unless it's been stripped of DRM. I found a good program to do this if you need one, just can't remember it off the top of my head...

Re: SqueezeBox server, Music from NAS (Samba), which way?

I'd definitly recommend Natty over Maverick, 10 had a couple of problems that 11 resolved for me (though i cant quite remember what they were now...). This page helped me a lot when setting up my samba share. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MountWindowsSharesPermanently It looks more complicated t...

Re: Squeezebox software on a joggler?

I have a similar setup to what yr after, I found ubuntu 11 to be the best platform for it, and it works really well :) To get it working with yr NAS you'll probably need to install SMBFS, assuming the NAS shares as a samba drive. Let us know if you run into any difficulties, tho I'm certainly no Lin...

Re: Cant seem to edit file to set throttle

What you can do is open up a terminal from the Applications->Accessories menu, then type
'sudo gedit /boot/grub.cfg'
That way you open it in a txt editor with the ability to save yr changes, hope that helps.

Re: Ubuntu for the O2 Joggler.

So I tried Natty on a different usb stick and everything works brilliantly, very chuffed. MAC has stuck, and even odd issues like podcasts on automatic repeat have gone. Thanks again.
