Doesn't fit on 4GB so that's an evening wasted.

If throttling has been changed and its still choppy it could be your usb stick, the read speed needs to be relatively decent, i tested the ubuntu image on 3 usb sticks and 1 was absolutely abysmal in reading and increased start up times, lag and choppiness in everything i was doing.

This could be the gamechanger we've been looking for, I don't think i can help, my knowledge in this area is fairly limited but this running smoothly could be incredible!

XBMC runs out of the box on linux 11.04 over at joggler.exotica.org.uk/ubuntu/ and can be found in Accessories>Sound and Video>XBMC, with regards to running from USB itself, are you talking as a standalone install?
