GTalk message 'notify'

Being a GTalk user using the openpeak skin i noticed that there is a 'unlit' gtalk icon in the top right. One would assume this would light up when someone was messaging you but it does nothing (that i have noticed).
Would anyone have any idea how to get this to work? Im only assuming the purpose of it is to notify the user of a message.
Would really love it if that flashed + a message notification sound played when a message came through.
