Finally got one!

Fired it up, punched in wireless network parameters and it works

A couple of basic questions though if you don't mind. I set up an account with O2 and have tried to set up a calendar but every time I get 'There has been an error' type of message at the end. I don't have an O2 mobile but they seem to say it doesn't matter. Do O2 still maintain the calendar feature or has it gone by the wayside?

The Internet Radio button is greyed out on my Joggler and when you press it there is a 'Launch Application' bar which when pressed just returns you to the main menu. I've tried to force an update using info gleaned from here including the Install Telnet and Force Update from the wiki pages but I get a 'Can't find url' type of message in the PuTTY application. Again, is this feature still maintained or is it a dead duck? It's currently on Version 19931.R3 (October 7 2009)

I don't have the balls to try any of the alternative OS setups yet but Mevi's XP one looks the easiest to setup and maintain. Is it as easy as its made out to be? And if I messed it up is it easy to reset it?

I'm sure I'll have plenty more to ask you and you'll soon get fed up with the newbie asking daft questions

I've not tried xp.. but i can highly recommend xubuntu from buzz

i burnt it onto an 8gig usb flash drive (8.99 from staples at the moment but i got mine for £8 a while ago from pc world)

Then unpack the .img.gz file using something a tool like 7-zip. (google it if you don't have it)

then Download Win32DiskImager from https://launchpad.net/win32-image-writer/0.1/0.1

Run W32DiskImager.exe, and select the unpacked .img file. Choose the drive that corresponds to your USB stick and use "Write" to write the image.

also good to follow buzz's instructions and change the temperature at which the joggler slows itself down

after booting xubuntu
sudo nano -w /boot/grub.cfg
At the end of the line that contains "splash" add the parameter "thermal.psv=80"

xbmc works really well on it as does general web browsing/streaming

I'm not sure about the calendar, but I probably think that as they have discontinued the Joggler, they have discontinued the calendar/internet radio as well . Haven't used the stock OS since the day I got it, though!


Alternative OS's are really easy to set up. Just write the disk image to a USB drive following the instructions provided by the user who made the distro, plug the USB into the Joggler and away you go! It doesn't touch the internal firmware, so if you mess it up you just reflash the USB drive.

Calendar still working wonderfully well here! The web interface is a little clunky but it is still up and running!

I had a joggler arrive in the post which just stuck on the main menu. the buttons clicked down, but nothing happened or i'd get returned to the main menu. I reflashed the unit using the 'birdslikewires' reflash tool and it was factory fresh and offering me my 50 free texts a month in no time. http://birdslikewires.co.uk/articles/jogglerflash

Either way, you'll need a usb stick. One to avoid is the teenie-tiny Lexar Echo... I bought one some months back and while it's very quick to write large files, write speeds for small files is really poor. Worked OK with Android, though.

Mine and Dan's builds of XP are great if you're familiar with Windows, although there's still some minor/major (depending on your needs with regard to headphone out and whether you are lucky with the NIC or not) driver issues to work out. It's windows xp, just like on a full sized machine, only the bootloader is different from what you'd already know. It's really fussy about what port on a hub you plug it into and mine runs best on a HDD (not enough power on the USB port to run a hub AND a HDD, though). Dan's got another small footprint XP/W2003 in the works which, like the others he has done is optimised for flash storage.

If you're looking for a mini desktop from the Joggler, you might find Linux is a better experience as everything just works. Buzz's Linux builds are really impressive. Android too if you want to keep it touch only.

My Joggler S3 bucket, the one you're downloading from is located in the US, so depending on where you are, it might not be as quick. Saying that, I uploaded it to the bucket quicker than you are downloading!

Thanks to your easy to follow instructions I got XP working!

However I didn't realise that you had to leave the flash drive in to run it!

So now I downloading the reflash tool as mentioned above but it seems to not need it as I restarted the joggler with the flash out and its running the original software

Another thing that has happened is that in the process of formatting the flash drive, AFTER I had XP running, is that my 8GB flash has now been re-sized to 200mb

many distributions split the usb drive into different partitions and windows can usually only detect the first one

i use bootice to reformat back to one partition

Tried the PnP MKII tonight on it and it didn't do anything so I've tried another card and now I think it's bricked All I've got is a blank screen. I'll leave it til the morning and see what happens.

I had to wait a lot longer than i thought i would have to , maybee 15 to 20 mins , so my advice for pnpII would be to plug it in and then just leave for a good while
If it is bricked then i would imagine you will have to use the reflashing tool first .
After install of pnp II , it does take a long while to boot up , again , just leave for a while and dont panic

How much of a difference does changing the thermal setting make to performance? I've not used mint/xubuntu/ubuntu for a while now because they they seemed sluggish on my jogglers in just about every task apart from squeezebox player / server. I never got round to trying different thermal settings.

Would definitely recommended this thermal tweak, it transformed my joggler experience but as previously stated at your own risk

I think it's more down to my ignorance than your programme

Another silly question. When the file is extracted to the USB there is one folder called 'PnP MKII etc etc' and in this folder are a number of other folders. Should you just leave the PnP folder or should you 'Cut and Paste' all the others out of it? If you know what I mean

That was my mistake zipping that version up - they shouldn't have been in an extra folder! Sorry - they need taking out of it. If you have a couple of minutes though, download the most recent version from the link in the first post of the PnP Mk II thread instead (it seems to be reliable). When unzipped, the files should be able to go straight on the stick!

Re-flashed it (I nearly sound like I know what I'm speaking about) with the birdslikewires tool and it lives!

Even got Internet Radio and Apps and Calendar to boot. Well chuffed

Might spend a while mucking about with it as is and then try PnP again
