What route to Squeeze Nirvana?

Hello

I've just got myself a new, sealed box, Joggler from e-bay :-)
I'm pleased to report that it just upgraded when plugged in to a wired connection (couldn't get the original firmware to connect to WPA2 WiFi) - it now has 8686.53 (boardrev:2). No problems like other folk have reported recently - phew!

I'm a late comer to this wonderful little device, and to be honest Squeezebox.

My immediate plan is to run Squeezeplay to control the Receiver part of a Duet, but I also like the idea of retiring the old sub-notebook that I'm running as my Squeezebox server and putting that on the Joggler too with a big USB drive (once I've found or fabricated a suitably discrete USB connector).

I've done lots of reading and appreciate that as a minimum I have to enable SSH, and maybe I should go the PnP route, or just put a different Linux build altogether on the Joggler...
I'm a bit impatient (why didn't I find Squeezebox and the Joggler YEARS ago?) so I'm asking if the experienced folk here can offer some advice on my best route?

Thanks

Simple really, start with the stock firmware and well tested hacks and see if it suits your SqueezeNeeds ;).

Best way to get going is read http://www.jogglerwiki.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=88 and use that to get SSH going.

Once you have that, hop over and read http://birdslikewires.co.uk/articles/sq ... or-joggler and your good to go.

No reason to try anything outside of the easy for the 1st cut.

Running extra stuff from USB is great and magic for hacking but if you just want something that has a high 'girlfriend approval factor' and gets you going quickly there is not need to make it hard ;).

Thanks - that was the conclusion I'd come to :-)

Got SSH connected
Ran the script
it restarted and after pressing the home icon to get rid of the registration details I'm left with a blank screen - my wife is finding this quite funny! I've broken my new toy already!

Is it because I haven't completed the registration maybe?
I can still SSH in to it so there's nothing major wrong!

OK
the screen is not totally blank, I have the home icon which I can 'press' the WiFi Icon and the date/time

I did a registration with Mickey mouse values and got a message back that displayed and when I cleared that I got the 'blank' screen.

SSH also seems intermittent, sometimes it won't connect, others I can connect but responses are very slow... - Wifi looks pretty good but I'll try moving it and my laptop next to the router.

Panic Over!
I edited the applications.xml to add the missing <applications> line at the start (crash course in vi before breakfast ;-)) file to get the Icons back and diagnosed a WiFi dead spot in the house.

The Touch has been happy there for months but the Duet Receiver didn't like it (Blue/Yellow LED) and I'm pretty sure that's what was causing poor SSH as when I moved it all up to my study this morning (and having a fresh brain) all is fine. So the touch has to go back downstairs till I sort out cabling and/or move the router.

So I'll have the joggler up here too and my wife will have to wait for her music controller picture frame... :-)

Argh, that bug again! I would have loved to see your applications.xml file before SqueezePlay was installed. Once I recover some desk space I'll set this Joggler back up and find some time to sort that 'vanishing icons' bug once and for all.

Hi - sorry been a bit busy. There was a backup of the file - is that created by your script? (I did look at the script but can't remember) I can copy that.

I ended up completely re-doing the home network so can't SSH in right now because I don't have the address to hand - can do over the weekend though.

Thanks for your wonderful work on SqueezePlay for the Joggler - there will some beer (or web hosting) vouchers on their way to you soon when I can get the login for my wife's PayPal account...

The

Code: Select all

applications.xml_backup
file just has

Code: Select all

</applications>
in it.
