UK tag question?

Curiosity question.

A long time ago I had someone that worked for me; she was a very nice. It was difficult a bit to watch her pour a beer and wait until it was warm to serve it.

That said she went back to the UK on vacation with her boyfriend one day. Her boyfriend asked me what I wanted (trinket tourist like). He was American.

I asked him if he would be so kind to bring me back some UK automobile tags. He did.

Never did figure out where they came from or if they were custom vanity plates. They were plain black with the letters 26BRI on them. This was in the 1980's and I do not know how old or new they were.

Just curious about the alpha numeric order of the tags and if these were "vanity plates"?

I think they would be historical and date back to >50 years ago. Somebody must have transferred them from one car to the next for many changes of car as it's not otherwise possible to re-use a number. They do not correspond to any alphanumeric pattern in recent use in the UK.

Thank you dwl99.

Yeah; they have this look to them except for the alphanumeric order to them.

The alphabetic code suggests they were registered in Cardiff, Wales

Thank you castalla. The above pictures are plates on ebay or something. I have fond memories of working in Wales.

The tags that I have are "26BRI".

Where are these from?

If the number is a genuine number I believe they're actually Irish.

Details on how the UK system for number plates (we don't call them tags) works are here.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vehicle_r ... erritories

The RI of the alpha section is the area code on that style of plate.

Yep - I think they're Irish plates from County Dublin.

Thanks folks. Well I did request genuine UK plates back then.

Never asked though where specifically they came from other than the UK

Sadly, they aren't UK plates! The Irish Republic (Eire) isn't part of the UK .... see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irish_Republic

Thanks guys.

Yup; she was Irish and went back home to visit her family.

Thinking maybe I didn't ask for UK plates; just car plates.

I was just wondering where they came from and now guessing that they are genuine antique plates. (~50 years old?)

Difficult to say - but they could be pretty old.
